The cybercrime link from those behind the door (incarcerated) to those in the free world

On February 20th, 2024 I attended Dr. Tessa Cole’s virtual event to learn about cybercrimes happening online. I learned about cybercriminals and the ways that they scheme online, by creating an alias and using loopholes they conduct crimes online by trying to steal things such as online data, money, or worst of all identity. Identity theft reports almost doubled from the year 2020 to 2021, from around 28,000 to around 51,000 reports made, and even with these numbers countless crimes aren’t even reported. SIM swapping is the act of cybercriminals tricking someone into receiving a victim’s cell service to try and get through to somebody’s information, usually by getting passed the two-factor authentication in place to try and protect somebody’s account, and it has been becoming an issue along with it not being accounted for until 2022. This event relates to my career goals as I will need to keep the work I do safe from cybercrimes, and by learning about the tactics that cybercriminals use to get data, I can use precautions to keep myself safe.
