Data Analyst Intern at Aramark Corporation

From this Internship at Aramark, I have learned countless IT skills as well as Professional development in the field of business. Some of the IT skills I built upon were in relation to SQL statements and using them to change data entries in our database. I also improved my Excel skills greatly as I learned how to combine SQL statements with the information from Excel spreadsheets. I also learned how to test user stories and figure out how to eliminate the bugs within them. Lastly, aside from my analytical skills that I learned, I also gained a great deal of experience in my business professional communication and presentation skills.

Aramark is a food, facility, and uniform service company. They work within a multitude of different facilities; Education, Healthcare, Sports & Entertainment, and Business & Government. Aramark began in 1936 when a man named Davre Davidson started selling peanuts out of his Dodge truck. After decades of building the company, Aramark placed their Headquarters in the city of Philadelphia in 1994. Aramark has continued to help provide service to millions of consumers as well as offer their full service to people who have experienced events in which they have been left without food. In 2014, they updated their logo and tagline to “We Dream. We Do.” Last year in 2015, Aramark joined forces with the American Heart Association in order to improve the health of Americans by 20% through executing their beliefs on commitments to creating healthy menus, educating to consumers, engaging within the community, and executing leadership and research. Today, Aramark is continuing to grow around the world by providing service excellence.

As a Data Analyst Intern for Aramark, I was given a great deal of responsibility. The big project that I worked on throughout the summer was in relation to our Prima Web Master system. It was very cluttered with different customer entries. These entries were worded or abbreviated in however which way the customer had entered it. Therefore, there was no set naming standard. This is where I began to put my skills to use. I worked side by side with the Director of IT and learned how to write SQL statements as well as interpret data in a way that works the best for our customers and our database. Then, each week I would be assigned a specific produce item to reform and set conventions for. For example, I would be assigned “Apples.” From here I would execute SQL statements to pull all entries including “Apple” and place the results in an Excel spreadsheet. The number of data entries for each produce item ranged from 1,000 – 100,000’s. I would then analyze the data and create a set of naming conventions for the descriptions, weight, and much more for each entry. After a specific produce product was completed, the Director of IT, CIO, and I would analyze my work and write a SQL statement to then replace the old entries with my newly reformed ones. I did this for a multitude of products and made a large impact in reducing Aramark’s clutter in their Prima Web Master system.
