MIS 2101 – Information Systems in Organizations
While only an introductory course to the massive world of MIS, this class managed to encapsulate and accurately describe the scale and importance of the world of ever-changing technological applications in the business sector. Topics such as enterprise systems, customer relationship management systems, artificial intelligence, business flow and cloud computing were all heavily extrapolated on as the consistent focus on business databases and processes were always present in the background. While the theory was heavy, the class also offered an introduction through a mock business situation in SalesForce that not only allowed us to get comfortable with that type of enterprise wide technology, but also internalize the tremendous value these systems have for corporations. This was an important course as not only did it further my interest in the MIS field, but also taught me just what systems I’d be utilizing in my professional career.
MIS 2402 – Data-Centric Application Development
A code heavy introductory course that taught the programming languages of CSS, HTML, jQuery, and JavaScript to develop and construct applications. While heavy on the coding, the class also taught us how to troubleshoot and identify the multiple different problems and errors that can appear when coding, as well as how to implement APIs to develop an application. While the course was relatively tough, it also was a much needed touch up on my lack luster coding skills at the time, especially if I plan on going into application development in my future.
MIS 2502 – Data Analytics
Data Analytics focused heavily on the utilization of technologies such as SQL, Tableau, R, and MongoDB to extract, transform, load and visualize large quantities of data. SQL was used to identify and analyze records in a structured database, while MongoDB was used for much bigger, non-structured databases. With the data in hand, the class taught us how to use Tableau to transform that dataset into uniformed structures to be correctly analyzed and visualized appropriately. On the other hand, R was used to visualize and mine data. While the technological aspects of the class was heavy, it was also used to show how important these pools of data can be when utilized correctly, and that without proper insights and analysis the data isn’t very valuable. This class was probably one of the most important classes I will take in my college career, as it not only taught the extremely important languages of SQL and MongoDB, but also gave me a passion for the analytical side of information systems.
MIS 3406 – Cloud Architecture
One of the biggest advancements in technology has been the creation and use of the Cloud when it comes to applications and storage. This class focused heavily on the internal aspects of creating a cloud based server, primarily through the use of Amazon Web Services and EC2 instances. We also got a crash course in the language of node.js as well as a deeper understanding of how exactly the internet works. Since in the future cloud systems will be widely implemented in every form in the business sector, this class will make it so I am not completely lost.
