United States Cold Storage
Since February 2019  | Junior Java Developer

In February 2019 I started my position as a Junior Java Developer at United States Cold Storage. It was the ultimate opportunity to apply everything I have learned during my time at Temple in a real-world scenario. As a developer, I write Java Code. This code is going to be used within the company’s electronic warehouse management system. Currently, I am assigned to write functionality that facilitates the process of gathering and sending data to other businesses, e.g. companies that send their goods to US Cold Storage in order to store it in one of the warehouses and then send it to one of their customers. US Cold will receive an electronic document, which contains information about the goods shipped to it in a specific format. I am working on code, which reads in the information and transforms it in order to make it accessible to the user and store it in the warehouse database. This process is called electronic data interchange and a key factor that ensures that customers’ goods are handled quickly and appropriately.

My responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining code for the company’s electronic warehouse management system based on Java EE and the Spring framework.
  • Maintaining and enhancing the application’s web interface based on Java Server Pages served with Spring MVC and single page Angular applications.
  • Creating a Python script that allows easy, platform independent setup of the development environment.
  • Developing a proof of concept to containerize several applications using Docker in order to enable a continuous development environment and possible deployment to the cloud.

How the position ties in with the different things I learned at Temple University:

  • The University core curriculum: For my science general education requirement, I took a class called Cyberspace and Society. It introduced me to HTML and CSS, which are used to build webpages. While the underlying technology used at US Cold is a lot more complex. HTML and CSS are also used to build the user interface of the Warehouse Management System.
  • The Fox School core business requirements: A lot of the company’s processes are within the supply chain. We got introduced to several concepts (e.g. scheduling) in our MSOM class.
  • The MIS department requirements: I use all the programming knowledge I gained during my MIS classes. While US Cold uses Java instead of PHP, I can still leverage my basic understanding of programming in order to write code. Further, I use the knowledge gained in Enterprise IT architecture to understand how the company’s different servers interact within the internal network.

EG Woodstocks Augsburg e.V.
March 2015  |  Accounting Internshipegwoodstocks

In spring 2015 I had the opportunity to work as an Intern for the EG Woodstocks Augsburg e.V. in Augsburg, Germany. EG Woodstocks Augsburg e.V. is a local amateur ice hockey club, which participates in the German Bezirksliga West, which is organized by the Bayerischen Eissport-Verband e.V.. This internship allowed me to get first insight in the field of business. I experienced how Accounting works in the business world and got hands on experience with software applications that help businesses to manage their resources efficiently and keep track of their finances.
