IT and Tax Internship at Cross America
This summer I had the pleasure of working at Cross America Partners LP. They are located in downtown Allentown, PA. The company is a publicly traded master limited partnership that is a leading wholesale distributor of motor fuels and owner and lessee of real estate used in the retail distribution of motor fuels.
I engaged in many projects during my tenure. Here are a few of the lengthy ones:
– After learning about the company’s database structure, I started completing small tasks such as resetting passwords and unlocking certain folders so clients can access files. The Information Systems Director also guides me through bigger tasks such as monitoring database efficiency and sending diagnostic reports to our corporate owner.
– I did a lengthy project which concerns calculating accumulated depreciation at many of the corner stores that our company owns. I used excel and went through each asset calculating the depreciation, switching between double declining and straight-line methods depending on the store and asset. The data that was sent to us could not be transferred through excel, so everything had to be be copied which lengthens time.
– The scanning project I did involved taking invoices and scanning them in our database. Where the real important part comes into play is where the schema is used. What I learned in MIS 2502 became useful because I would input information such as customer, item, invoiceitem and invoice. By filling in the primary keys, foreign keys and other attributes it creates an accessible database for accountants and other employees to access what they need.
