Infrastructure Intern

  • Role: Infrastructure Intern
  • Organization: Temple University Information Technology Services (ITS)
  • Job date: 10/4/2024 – 5/7/2025

I worked remotely as an Infrastructure Intern with Temple University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) Infrastructure team, a division within a large, urban university’s technology department. Temple University’s ITS supports a variety of IT service areas, including academic technology, application and data management, business operations, technology support services, and infrastructure.

In this role, I utilized tools such as GitHub, RedHat Enterprise Linux, RedHat Ansible Automation Platform, and NetBox to support a wide range of infrastructure tasks. My focus was on automating and auditing virtual machines to increase efficiency and reduce manual intervention in creating and managing IT resources.

Responsibilities/Projects:

  • Automation: Created Ansible scripts to automate the provisioning of virtual machines (VMs) based on user-submitted forms, streamlining the process and minimizing the need for manual configuration.
  • Auditing: Developed a NetBox inventory auditing workflow using Python scripts to identify virtual machines with missing or incomplete attributes—such as tenant information, lifecycle environment, monitoring status, FOAPAL codes, patching schedules, and tags. The workflow generates a report listing virtual machines with missing data and automatically sends it via email as an attachment, helping improve data consistency and operational efficiency across the system.

During this internship, I enhanced my technical knowledge and gained hands-on experience by writing Ansible scripts to automate virtual machine (VM) provisioning, developing Python scripts for auditing, and utilizing Linux commands to interact with the operating system. I also learned to effectively use tools such as GitHub, RedHat Enterprise Linux, RedHat Ansible Automation Platform, and NetBox, further refining my understanding of managing and optimizing IT infrastructure.

This internship was highly relevant to my major in Management Information Systems (MIS), as it allowed me to apply concepts from courses on cloud computing, Linux commands, and Python programming. It provided invaluable, real-world experience that bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the IT field.
