Information Technology Intern
During the Summer of 2018 I had the opportunity to intern for Datum Storage Solutions under the IT department. Datum Storage Solutions is a 100 employee manufacturing company located in Emigsville Pennsylvania.
My overall role during my time with the company was to interview the head of each department to identify where technology could be used to increase overall productivity of the employees and then address the problems which were discussed. This information was quantified based on different areas which the IT department deemed necessary, (Business Continuity, Cost, Benefit) these numbers were entered into tableau to get a better understanding of which problems were most urgent, and was then presented to the managers. The first project I worked on was to improve the functionality of various shop machines. To do this the IT department upgraded both the hardware and software of the machines. I was responsible for upgrading the hardware as well as summarizing and reporting the benefits of the software upgrade to justify the cost. The second project I worked on during my time there was to develop and monitor a plan for offsite data storage for the servers, databases, and workstations throughout the company. The final project I worked on while at Datum was creating a training program on various software used during a regular business day (Macola, Synergy, Office 365)
From my time spent at Datum Storage Solutions I learned had to more effectively communicate between IT people and the management. I also gained a much better understanding of the hardware side of IT similar to what we will be learning in MIS 3406. Finally this internship allowed me to gain a much more in depth understanding of what IT departments do and overall business processes which we have learned in a variety of classes at fox.
