Research Paper

The Internet of Things is the idea of connecting any device to the Internet and to other connected devices. It is basically a giant network of connected things and people collecting and sharing data about how they are used and about the environment around them. Nowadays, more and more devices are connected to the Internet and the Iot has truly brought economic benefits to its users by analyzing the resulting data streams. It has a huge impact on numerous industries. For example, by taking advantage of the Iot, intelligent transport solutions can help to fasten traffic flows, reduce fuel consumption, expedite vehicle repair schedule and above all save lives. Considering the Iot on a more personal level, for instance, the application of the Iot on home security system, it enables users to remotely control their locks and thermostats, cool down their home as well as open their windows, based on their preferences.

According to Thomas H. Davenport, he believes that “To make the Internet of Things useful, we need an Analytics of Things. This will mean new data management and integration approaches, and new ways to analyze streaming data continuously.” I totally agree with him. In this course MIS 2502, we are studying data analytics, in particular, how to store data in data warehouse, how to extract, insert data into a database using MySQL and tools that help to analyze data (R). I think that we can learn how to manage and examine streaming data to get meaningful information using the tools and knowledge that we have acquired from the class.

The most popular IoT application at the moment is likely the smart home since it is the one that is low-priced and readily available to consumers. There is a wide variety of products on the market that users can control with their voices to make their lives more connected and convenient than ever before; one of which is the Amazon Echo. This device works through its voice assistant, Alexa, which users can talk to in order to perform a variety of functions. Users can tell Alexa to play music, provide a weather report, get sports scores, order an Uber, and more.
