Screen Shot 2017-01-31 at 8.18.50 PMOne of my most significant accomplishments was when I suggested creating a program that focused on suicide prevention and mental health awareness and was put in charge of the program at Montgomery County CommScreen Shot 2017-01-31 at 8.19.56 PMunity College. It was a 5-day program that consisted of a 16-hour certification on the different models of suicide prevention, intervention, and the aftermath. It also consisted of putting together packages for local high schools and colleges, managing tables on campus to hand out information to minimize the taboo around mental health and suicide, and introducing a mental health awareness kiosk to the campus. The program was a success and I’m sure Dominic, my cousin who I lost to suicide, would have been proud. I learned a lot through the program and lot about myself as a leader, where my strengths lay, and where I can continue to grow. (03/2015-06/2015)

With being personally affected by suicide and seeing how the damage cascades, I think that mental health wellness and suicide awareness should Screen Shot 2017-01-31 at 8.31.29 PMnot have a stigma around it. I have raised over a thousand dollars and participated in volunteer work and walks for the American Suicide Prevention Foundation in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. It is becoming a growing issue and can no longer be ignored. (05/2010-present)

Afterwards, we sat in on some classes and got to know the students. It was really an eye-opener to see them so happy for books that otScreen Shot 2017-01-31 at 8.53.02 PMher kids throw in the trash. Even though they were so young they still knew how lucky they were to be in this school and loved learning .. and telling us about it! (01/10-03/10)
