Global Business and Technology Internship – 2014
As being apart of the global information management team for Prudential, we are in charge of over 5000 Win-tel servers. With 50% virtualization and growing, our responsibility is to grow and manage those servers. Also troubleshoot and decommission servers that are no longer used. There is a rapid growth in the way we receive and work on the needs of the business. The biggest responsibility is virtualization, our team creates over 100 servers a month and that number needs to grow in response of the demand.
My internship was an awesome experience; I have learned a lot and will be able to use these lessons throughout my career. I shadowed my teammates, and learned their roles. Prudential has a great work life balance, everyone on my team works from home at least twice a week. The biggest surprise to me, was how many people have been here 20+ years. The company has a very high retention rate and people are very satisfied with working at Prudential for years. I have learned the ins and outs of running a data center. My main focus for the first half of the internship was inventory. I inventoried every server that we support, to update our internal inventory tracking database. This task took about 3 or 4 weeks on and off, the other half of inventorying was also preparing servers for disposal. I ended up stacking and inventorying 32 skids of servers, over 600 individual machines. I also had other jobs when it came to hardware, I would install processors and ram frequently along with cable swaps and activation. The best part is the team that I’m a part of, it’s never a dull moment when the whole team is around. I really enjoyed working at Prudential and hope to have the opportunity to work there full time.
Part-time 2014-2015
I continued to work in server operations over the fall and spring semesters 18 hours a week. I have taken over control of inventory, decommissions and disposal of our servers. I am learning more about the everyday processes now that I have full access. I am an essential part of the team. I am looking forward to my full time work over the summer.
Global Business and Technology Internship – 2015
This summer I will continue on to work in server operations for Prudential. I will beable to take on more projects and learn more beacuse I now have access. I will be working 40 hours a week and participate in the intership program.
