A process map is a visual diagram that guides all the outcomes that are in that process in an order. Having all possibilities labeled and shown on the map to guide your decisions and to analyze to see if a process can be made more productive.
Dana Persaud says
Great point! I definitely agree that process mapping helps in analyzing where the process can be more productive and efficient. It is probably one of the most important aspects of process mapping.
Hamida Akther says
Process mapping identify problems in current process so that it can be improved in the future. It a great tool that assist organization in decision making.
Mairaliz Negron says
Hi Eduard,
I think you gave a great explanation on what a process map is. I think a process map is great way to make clearer decisions and like you said, analyze to see where their is room for more productivity.
Lancelot Nyandoro says
I would also add that mapping is a way of creating fixed task when solving a problem

Post
A swim lane diagram is a visual diagram that represents a process through a company showing what each person does, who has what authority to make what decision and how that affects the process. Doing a swim lane for the first time what very confusing but once the exam came around I was able to get the hang of it. When making a swim lane you have read. Very carefully which is what takes the most time. You have to read to understand how the process goes and make the swim lane correctly. I would recommend when making a swim lane make it as you read. It helps you not get confused or make a simple mistake that could mess the whole thing up. Overall swim lane is a great way to represent a process in a company. Reading one isn’t that difficult once you learn how to but making on can be tricky just be careful and you will get the hang of it.
Danylo Pidkova says
What are all the symbols used in swim lane diagrams, and what does each represent?
Circle, rectangle, diamond, arrow, cylinder, actors.
Swim lane diagrams use various symbols to represent different elements in a process flow. For example,
Circle: Represents the start or end point of a process.
Rectangle: Show a process step or an activity within the workflow.
Diamond: Represents a decision point in the process where a choice needs to be made. Depending on the decision outcome, the flow may take different paths.
Arrow: Arrows connect the different symbols and show the direction of the process flow. They indicate the order in which activities are carried out.
Cylinder: Used to represent data storage or a database.
Actors are represented by lanes, typically horizontal or vertical, separating different entities (aka agents/actors) involved in the process. Each lane corresponds to a specific role or department, making it clear who is responsible for each step.
I definetely need more practice buidling those diagrams. How comfortable are you with them?
Cristina Valentin says
Hi Danylo,
I feel like I need more practice with the diagrams too as it is my first time using them. However, I can see how helpful they can be in making decisions.
Colin Johnson says
I need more practice as well! I understand the concept of swim lane diagrams and have definitely seen them used before to give explanation to a process, however I have never had to create my own from scratch. Although confusing in some ways, I think these will be very useful.
Juan Delgado says
Hi Danylo,
I feel mostly comfortable with the diagrams. The only thing that I get confused with is the diamonds, but then I realized they’re made before a yes or no situation. Other than that with the diagrams, I feel pretty comfortable with these diagrams.
Rachel Bard says
The first swim lane I attempted and “completed” was during our first class. I will not lie and say my fourth attempt at the swim lane was what I decided to submit for my in class assignment. But even that fourth one was looking messy, this feels like a skill that requires some practice patience.
Jenna Oldroyd says
Hi Danylo,
I also need more practice creating and drawing swim lane diagrams. However, I noticed that it was much easier to read and identify what was happening once I understood the symbols.
Danylo Pidkova says
I am glad I am not alone in this. Thank you all for your insightful feedback!
Practice makes perfect, right?
Eduard Lagutin says
Hey Danylo,
Great explanation of all the symbols that are used in a swim lane diagram. Very clear explanations.
Me personally I feel fairly competent with them but I can definitely learn a lot more since there is always room for improvement.
Thank you and great job!
Georgios Zisis says
Hi Danylo,
Thank you for breaking each symbol down! I have definitely seen a swim lane diagram before, but who knew there was an actual reason behind the shapes being used. I definitely need more practice at building these diagrams, and I think every time you do one you can see an improvement that can be made.
Zarmina Khan says
Danylo, I am definitely not confident in my swim diagram building yet, it’s all super confusing to me. The way you described it here is definitely more concise than what I have been able to find online and will definitely help me in our next exam. Thank you!
Mahbuba Ahmed says
Hi Danylo
It was a great explanation. The breakdown of symbols makes it easier to understand their roles in swim lane diagrams and the explanation in the last paragraph was very informative for me. Thank you!
Darren Nolan says
After practicing I was able to get the hang of it. For me I had to read a bunch so I knew I wasn’t making them wrong. I think that is probably a problem a lot of people have but that could just me be.
Cristina Valentin says
What are the benefits of swim lanes?
I think that using swim lanes creates a tangible way to view planning processes. Swim lanes can help when trying to make an important business decision by seeing all possible actions, decisions and their outcomes. This diagram type can also be used when trying to find an alternative way of doing something in your day to day workplace or life. Being able to map out all of the possible outcomes can help to make a more informed decision that you feel more confident in.
Leanne Sheely says
I agree I think swim lanes is a great way to help make a informed decision. It’s always great to see the visual of your ideas instead of just in your head.
Hamida Akther says
Swim lanes does helps see opportunities for improvement by eliminating duplications. I agree that it makes planning processes really easy by identifies who does what and in what order in chronological and logical way.
Hadeer Saad says
Hello Cristina,
I agree that the swim lane is vital in business planning and decision-making.
Regan DeShazo says
great post i would also like to add
swim lanes aid in standardizing processes, making them valuable for onboarding new team members and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Overall, the use of swim lanes enhances process visibility, collaboration, and efficiency, making them a valuable tool for organizations aiming to optimize their workflows.
Leanne Sheely says
Process mapping what is it?
Well process mapping is basically just a visual story. It’s the type of visual you have in your head when you follow along with someone when they are telling a story that has a lot of actions and twists and tuns. Since we tend to create a visual in our heads when someone is talking why not just create the visual for them so it’s easier to follow along? Well that’s exactly why we use process mapping to make it easier on everyone. It is scientifically proven that people respond better to visuals. Visuals help our memory retention and help hold someone’s attention better as well. This is a short definition of process mapping and why we use it.
Dana Persaud says
I agree! Process mapping is a great visual that makes it easier to understand. Visual learning is beneficial in all types of environments and definitely help the understanding and memorization f the steps in a decision-making process.
Ereny Abousaif says
Hi Leanne,
The way you summarized it was great. It put everything into perspective because I did not think about it in that sense. This helps me understand it more and be able to visualize the meaning when I need it in the future!
Andrew Ravitz says
What are all the symbols used in swim lane diagrams, and what does each represent?
Circle: Signifies the starting and ending of an event
Rectangle: Represents an activity in the process
Diamond: Represents a decision that must be made
Arrow: Indicates the flow of the process
Cylinder: Represents stored data
Dana Persaud says
What is Process mapping and why do we use it?
Process mapping is a visual representation of a process and is used to identify all the steps and decisions in process. Process mapping identifies the problem areas and can show how well process is working. Thus, aiding in an efficient cycle of decision making.
Maurice Chism says
I believe that this process is a great way for people to break down the challenges and potential bumps in a way that can be explained for individuals who may or may not process data in the way others may.
Maurice Chism says
Why are we learning Salesforce in this course?
In most companies, as an employee you will be using some type of database that houses information critical for business use. This form of data storage we have been introduced can influence us in multiple ways: 1. We can have working knowledge of some form of CRM that we can place on our resume. 2. That we understand the process for becoming the “expert” within the company where we are employed. 3. We can have a head start on knowing how important it is as an entrepreneur to keep the data we recieve and how to use it to grow the business.
Juan Delgado says
Hi Maurice,
I think you explained the question very well. I like how you explained how a lot of companies use databases so it’s better for us to get used to databases, then rather than jumping into them when we are in our internships and jobs.
Rachel Bard says
I could not agree with your three reasons more, Maurice. The final one struck me, we can have a head start as entrepreneurs. I always assumed I would be hiring some outside person or company to tell me my company’s data, now I feel it may not be that hard of a task. Why not save a few dollars and learn every aspect of what it takes to truly run a business? I am loving getting the expertise now while I have the time and no “real life” business mistakes are being made.
Ereny Abousaif says
Hi Maurice,
Great answer! The second reason was the one that made more sense to me because what would be better than understanding the process for the company? every employee should know the company in and out and become an “expert”. It allows for troubleshooting to be easier!
Colin Johnson says
What are the benefits of creating a database in Salesforce?
Some of the benefits of creating a database in Salesforce are:
Centralized Data Management
Improved Data Accuracy
Enhanced Collaboration
Efficient Query and Reporting
Automation and Workflow Optimization
Scalability
Customization and Flexibility
Security and Compliance
Integration Capabilities
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Capabilities
In summary, creating a database in Salesforce is a strategic investment that empowers organizations to manage data efficiently, drive collaboration, automate processes, and gain valuable insights for strategic decision-making. The platform’s robust features contribute to an agile and responsive business environment.
Corey Reagan says
Hey Colin I like how you broke it down in bullet points and then also made a summary of it all. I think any business now a day should definitely make use of Salesforce and all the benefits that it has. It can really contribute to a business in a positive way.
Zarmina Khan says
Colin,
Understanding how to create a database in salesforce is i hope going to be super helpful in how we can understand how salesforce and product management is going to be helpful in the business field. It for sure creates a robust feature and contributes to an agile business environment which is definitely helpful nowadays.
Hamida Akther says
What is process mapping and why we use it?
Process mapping is the visual representation of process and is utilize to identify all steps and decisions in process. we use process mapping because it identify problem areas and measure how efficiently process is working. Basis for developing solutions. Process mapping assist organizations to be more efficient and effective at achieving a specific task or goal by solving the issue.
Danylo Pidkova says
Hello Hamida,
Process mapping, as you rightly mentioned, is all about visually representing a process to identify its steps and decisions. I think it’s like a roadmap that helps organizations navigate towards greater efficiency and effectiveness in achieving their goals.
Juan Delgado says
What are all the symbols used in swim lane diagrams, and what does each represent?
Circles represent the start and end of the process that is given. With every diagram you get a situation and put a circle it would have to be the start and end of the process. A rectangle is when there is an activity within the process. A diamond is when a decision has to be made within the situation. A cylinder represents stored data. Arrows represent the flow of the process. Between circles, rectangles, diamonds, and cylinders there has to be an object that connects everything. The arrows connect all shapes. Actors represent the characters of the situation. They are put on the left side of the diagram. To know what the actors are in the situation, you would have to read the situation. You wouldn’t choose the names of the actors, but the professions of the actors to use that for the actors.
Mairaliz Negron says
Hi Juan,
I think you answered this question very well. You gave an accurate explanation for each shape used in the swim lane diagram, making it very easy to understand.
Mairaliz Negron says
Question: What are the benefits of swim lanes?
A benefit of a swim lane diagram is being able to see where you can improve. Swim lanes are visual representations that show us the flow of activities and allow us to be able to identify if there are any delays or mishaps to see where there is room for improvement, if needed. Another benefit of a swim lane is the clarity that it provides. It is a great organized diagram that is divided to show participants and the different departments along with the roles that they perform.
Salvatore Marsico says
Hi Mairaliz,
I enjoyed reading your post about the benefits of swim lanes. I agree with your benefits and how swim lanes provide clarity for everyone in the process including all of the actors involved.
Ajibola Sode says
This is very true. Swim lane diagrams are highly advantageous when it comes to identifying areas for process improvement and providing clarity. These diagrams visually lay out roles and workflows, making it easier to identify inefficiencies and understand how different parts of an organization interact with each other.
Hawa Barry says
Hey Mairaliz,
Besides visualizing processes, swim lanes are definitely ideal for seeing where there is room for improvement and overall making processes more efficient.
Rachel Bard says
The benefits of swim lanes are expedited learning processes. I feel if my job had a swim lane to describe how my job works, I would have caught on about a month quicker than I did reading a dull 200+ paged work manual.
Swim lanes are also super beneficial when it comes to the actors column. First of all swim lanes shows how many people it takes to get a particular task done, Second of all swim lanes show who you could possibly be working very closely with. It can also tell you who handles tasks when it leaves your hand, Shows the streamline if ever needed to retrace steps, or jump ahead a few steps. Swim lanes remind me of a Shoots and Ladders board game, different way of getting to the end, but at least the options are all laid out.
Salvatore Marsico says
Hi Rachel,
I believe you explained the benefits of a swim lane very well. I also agree with you that many jobs should have a swim lane to describe the process and it would make things a lot easier for everyone involved.
Salvatore Marsico says
What are all the symbols used in swim lane diagrams, and what does each represent?
– A circle signifies the starting and ending of an event in the process.
– A rectangle represents an activity in the process.
– A diamond represents a decision that must be made.
– An arrow(s) indicates the flow of the process.
– A cylinder represents stored data.
– Actors are the different departments/positions involved in the process.
What are the benefits of swim lanes?
There are a ton of extremely great benefits of swim lanes, but there are some key outliers. The best advantages to swim lanes are that they help see opportunities for improvements, help eliminate duplications, provide a basis for developing new solutions, and are a useful training tool.

Why are we learning Salesforce? As someone mentioned above, many companies use Salesforce. I used to work for insurance company that used this software and I currently work at a bank, and we use Salesforce as well. As a matter of fact, I was very excited to learn some of the tools Salesforce offers while completing labs 1a and 1b. At the bank we had training on how to use Salesforce, however, that training didn’t include much on how to use tools and make lists and so forth and focused more on how to add a client profile or submit a sales application. But those handy tools Salesforce offers are quite useful and I’m kind of excited to go to work Monday and play around with it and maybe create some reports or lists. It’s funny, when I first looked through the class syllabus and the material for week 1, I went back to my program analysis to make sure this class is in fact part of it. All this coding and programming talk made me doubt it, but after just the first week’s assignments I see how this class will help me with my accounting major.
Kerri McGuckin says
Hi Elena,
It’s awesome that you use Salesforce at your work. There is one department at my job that is switching to using Salesforce, but I don’t think I will need to use it. The reporting capabilities in the software does seem like it will help me with other software I currently use at my job.
Lesly Puma Vinansaca says
Hi Elena
I also used Salesforce when I worked for an insurance company but never did a deep dive into the website. I am excited to apply my new found knowledge of coding and programming to my future career.

What are the benefits of swim lanes?
A swim lane diagram is just a visual representation of a process that shows different activities and responsibilities assigned to various individuals or departments. One of the key advantages of using swim lane diagrams is improved communication among team members. By visually showing the process, it becomes easier to understand how different tasks and activities are interconnected and how responsibilities are distributed between different people. It helps in defining clear roles and accountabilities, making sure that everyone involved has a clear understanding of their responsibilities within the process. By showing the benefits of swim lane diagrams, organizations can streamline their processes, enhance team productivity, and ultimately deliver better results.
Elena Grigoryan says
Making it easy to clearly see how tasks are distributed between actors can also help make workflow more efficient by maybe revising some of the steps or roles.
Ajibola Sode says
Swim lanes process mapping offers several benefits. Firstly, it helps in identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies in a process by making it easier to see where delays or overlaps occur. Secondly, by visually separating different parts of a process, swim lanes facilitate better communication among team members about their roles and tasks. Thirdly, they clearly delineate responsibilities and processes, making it easier to understand who does what and when.
Swim lanes make it simpler to coordinate tasks across different departments or teams, ensuring a smoother workflow. They also assist in better understanding and allocation of resources as it becomes clear where resources are needed the most.
In essence, swim lanes help in creating a more organized, transparent, and efficient process flow in various project management and operational contexts.
Briana Seidle says
Hey Ajibola,
I appreciate your breakdown in explaining the purpose and benefits of swim lanes. This makes it easier to understand clearly and eliminate the possibility of misunderstanding.
Kerri McGuckin says
Hi Ajibola,
Thanks for the outline on swim lanes. The day after we went over these flowcharts in class, I was actually able to read an extremely in depth flow chart that somebody created at my job. I was likely the only one excited by this, but I thought it was interesting that I could apply it to my real life so quickly.
Ajibola Sode says
To add on swim lanes process mapping is more than a visualization tool it’s a strategy that enhances organizational efficiency and aligns operations with strategic goals and customer needs. By promoting continuous improvement and offering strategic insights, it enables organizations to adeptly navigate today’s complex business environment with clarity and confidence.
Jenna Oldroyd says
What are the benefits of swim lanes?
Swim lane diagrams can be used in every organization. It helps organizations visualize their roles and responsibilities. Swim lane diagrams establish workflow and tasks each person is responsible for. This diagram can help streamline the process for organizations while creating opportunities for possible improvement.
Briana Seidle says
What is Process mapping and why do we use it?
Process mapping outlines the individual steps within a process, identifying task owners, and detailing expected timelines. We use it to communicate processes among stakeholders and reveal areas of improvement.
Cheyanne Kostaras-Nesbitt says
Hi Briana. Great explanation. Very clear and concise. Process mapping is extremely useful in business communications, especially when looking for improvements!

Cheyanne Kostaras-Nesbitt says
Hi Kerri. I haven’t used epic yet, but each course I’ve had seems to introduce another software or database. Sales force so far seems incredibly user friendly and can be used for many different tasks across various roles and industries.
Kerri McGuckin says
*EDIT: I made a typo in my original post and wanted to add to it:

I think a lot of the information I learn in this class will help me almost immediately in my career because I will have a better understanding of the reporting platforms we use.
Learning about swim lanes has already helped me out at my job. There are so many workflows built into our electronic medical records system that are built on the backend by creating swim lanes. I was able to read a very in depth swim lane workflow after we learned about them in this class.
Ereny Abousaif says
What are the benefits of swim lanes?
Swim lanes are used to make tasks easier for individuals who are looking/using them. It allows them to explain how each role, task, obligation, etc is given out to everyone and allows them to have a better understanding of it all. Each column and row is there to ensure the visualization makes it easier for everyone.
Georgios Zisis says
Q: The following swim lane has four mistakes in it, locate and correct the issues.
A:
1. This swim lane diagram did not start and end with a circle. A circle signifies the starting and ending of an event in the process.
2. The decision of “in stock?” needs to have an arrow for “no”. A diamond represents a decision that must be made.
3. Deliver should be in a rectangle not a cylinder. A rectangle represents an activity in the process. and a cylinder represents stored data.
4. I am not sure if there needs to be a cylinder when a credit card is being used to show data being stored.
Georgios Zisis says
Oh I see the fourth mistake now! There should not be a name included for the stock manager incase they eventually move on from this role.
Cheyanne Kostaras-Nesbitt says
The main benefit of a swim lane diagram is to clearly show the expected flow of a system. In the class activity example, it was clear what the next step was in the hiring process, who was responsible to preform that action, and who they are handing the work to next. It clearly demonstrates how the system is supposed to work and who is supposed to make the decisions necessary for success, including what to do in the event of a potential failure (ex. a failed interview with the hiring manager).

What is Process mapping and why do we use it?
Process Mapping is a visual representation that illustrates the steps, activities, and interactions involved in a specific process. It’s usually a clear and comprehensive overview of how a process works. The main purpose of process mapping is to improve the efficiency, identify bottlenecks, and streamline workflow. Some key reasons why companies use process mapping is to understand and analyze data for future functions, communications, to make it easier for team members and other external parties to understand the flow of activities, standardizations which aids useful for procedures and ensuring consistency in the execution of tasks. Along with the training, continuous improvement, compliance and documentation, and problem solving. All aid in the process mapping which supports organizational efficiency, communication, and continuous improvement.
Max Smith says
Hi Zarmina
I appreciated your description of process mapping and analysis of why it is important. Having a visual illustration of all steps, activities, and interactions involved in any business process is extremely valuable.
Lancelot Nyandoro says
Why are we learning Salesforce in this course?

Swimlane’s visual diagram not only makes workflows smoother but also helps in finding and fixing problems faster. With Swimlanes tasks get done more efficiently and teams can see how to make things work even better.
Hadeer Saad says
What are all the symbols used in swim lane diagrams, and what does each represent?
The symbols used in the swim lane are:
An actor that represents a title and job duties
A circle that defines an opening and an ending
A rectangle that represents an activity in the process
A diamond that represents a decision
An arrow that indicates a flow
A cylinder that means stored data.
M'Kyah Graham says
Hello Hadeer,
I find the symbols used in swim lane diagrams (and other processing maps) rather intriguing. It further shows how detailed and organized process maps can be. I consider them rather helpful, especially as someone who benefits from being able to see things mapped/planned out in front of me.
M'Kyah Graham says
Swim Lane diagrams are a type of process map, that allows you to organize and visualize a series of events within a process. They map out the start of a process action by action. They show what decisions lead to what actions, and the multiple (possible) endings within a process as well. Swim lane diagrams are beneficial because they lay out a series of interactions that are otherwise not typically visible. It helps to identify specific entities within business processes, and the roles they play. It may also help you remember what steps are involved in certain processes. For example, understanding the purchase and sale of inventory. Creating a swim lane model would how you where the inventory comes from, and where it would end up. It lists out who’s directly involved with inventory transactions, where the inventory goes and the timeline of how everything happens.
Hadeer Saad says
Hello M’Kyah
Nice work! Swim Lane is a very nice tool to have because it makes our life easier and helps us run our business more efficiently.

Swim lanes are a visual organizing and categorization tool used in process mapping and flowcharts to depict the responsibilities, roles, or departments involved in a particular process. They are typically represented as horizontal or vertical lanes that group related activities. The benefits in using swim lanes are: the clarity and visibility that they provide in easily understanding the flow of activities. Another benefit is how swim lanes help identify problems and easily resolve them. Overall, swim lanes are a powerful tool for process visualization and analysis, enabling organizations to enhance transparency, collaboration, and efficiency in their workflows
Leanna Paul says
Hi Lesly, you did a good job explaining swim lanes and their purpose. Businesses can benefit from horizontal or vertical diagrams in order to eliminate inefficient steps or processes. Doing so helps a business work most efficiently. Good post!
Eduard Lagutin says
Swim lanes, a technique used in process mapping to organize information offer advantages in clarifying roles enhancing communication and improving efficiency. To start with they present an easy to understand layout of steps, in a process and who is responsible for each step. This reduces confusion. Encourages accountability. Moreover swim lanes promote collaboration between teams or roles by showing how they interact within a process. This fosters. Mutual understanding. They also help pinpoint bottlenecks and inefficiencies by highlighting where tasks transition between lanes allowing organizations to streamline processes and allocate resources effectively. In addition swim lanes encourage transparency and unity across departments by ensuring everyone comprehends their responsibilities in the process and can collaborate towards shared objectives. In summary swim lanes play a role, in optimizing processes fostering teamwork and enhancing efficiency.

Everything that you would need to make the water lane diagrams are in the story that the professor gives to you.

What is process mapping and why we use it?
Process mapping is the visual representation of process and is utilized to identify all steps and decisions in process. We use process mapping because it identifies problem areas and measures how efficiently the process is working. Basis for developing solutions. Process mapping assists organizations to be more efficient and effective at achieving a specific task or goal by solving the issue. Process mapping helps to define process boundaries, process ownership, process responsibilities, and effectiveness measures or process metrics. Process mapping is a technique that is used to visually map out workflow and processes. The purpose is to communicate how a process works in a concise and straightforward way. It helps to create a visual representation that shows exactly how the process works and identifies problems in your current process so that you can make improvements to it in the future. We use process mapping because it enables you to prioritize automation opportunities so that your overall process is as streamlined as possible.

Aside from being a helpful organizational tool, swim lane diagrams highlight flaws and strong points in a business process. Plotting out core processes helps to eliminate bottlenecks, waste, and inefficiency. A swim lane diagram also provides a clear snapshot of a business process start to finish. This allows stakeholders and employees to easily understand the business process of the firm they are working for.
Jorgelina Rodriguez says
hey leanna. our answers were very similar i agree with yours as well

Swim lanes, sometimes referred to as process bands or functional bands, have several advantages when it comes to process and workflow visualization. First of all, they improve accountability and transparency by offering a structured and unambiguous depiction of roles and responsibilities inside a process. Second, by visually dividing jobs and subprocesses, swim lanes make it easier to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies. Thirdly, by providing a common knowledge of process flow and individual duties, they enhance team member communication and collaboration. Additionally, by emphasizing areas for improvement or streamlining, swim lanes support efforts towards process optimization and continuous improvement. All things considered, adding swim lanes to process diagrams improves organization-wide clarity, effectiveness, and teamwork.
Samir Lagouit says
Jorgelina,
The way you described swim lanes as something to improve transparency was not something I had heard of before. I always thought of it as something to visualize the workflow process, and help understand the systems you are working in. I think it improving transparency is an underrated and great way to describe this.

Swim lanes also provide a valuable tool for identifying bottlenecks or areas of inefficiency in a process. By visually mapping out the flow of work, it becomes clear where tasks are piling up or where there are delays in completing certain activities. This can help teams to address these issues proactively, make adjustments to the workflow as needed, and ultimately improve the overall efficiency of the process. By showing the benefits of swim lane diagrams, organizations can streamline their processes, enhance team productivity, and ultimately deliver better results.
Dylan Milano says
Hi Corey,
I strongly resonate with your view on the benefits of swim lane diagrams. The way you emphasize how these diagrams improve communication among team members truly stands out to me. Visualizing the process flow and assigning responsibilities to different individuals or departments through swim lanes fosters a shared understanding of how tasks interconnect and who is accountable for each step.
Daniel Taylor says
Hey Corey thank you for helping me understand why swim lanes are important as I begin to struggle in understanding this tool and why we need to use it in this class. I’m also starting to think I’m not good at this to a high extend and need to fully study this more.

What are all the symbols used in swim lane diagrams, and what does each represent?
Swim lane diagrams, also known as cross-functional flowcharts or deployment flowcharts, utilize specific symbols to represent different elements within a process. These symbols help to visually illustrate the flow of activities across various functional areas or departments. Here are some common symbols used in swim lane diagrams and their representations:
1. Rectangles: Rectangles represent process steps or activities within the workflow. Each rectangle typically describes the task or action to be performed.
2. Arrows: Arrows indicate the flow direction between different process steps. They show the sequence of activities and how information or materials move through the process.
3. Lanes: Lanes are vertical or horizontal divisions within the diagram that separate different functional areas or departments. Each lane typically represents a specific role, department, or individual responsible for executing certain tasks.
4. Start/End symbols: These symbols mark the beginning and end points of the process flow. They often take the form of circles or ovals and indicate where the process starts and finishes.
5. Diamond symbols: Diamonds are used to represent decision points or branching in the process flow. Depending on the outcome of a decision, the flow may follow different paths.
6. Annotations: Annotations provide additional information or clarifications within the diagram. They can include notes, explanations, or comments to help users understand the process better.
By using these symbols in combination, swim lane diagrams effectively communicate the flow of activities, handoffs between departments, decision points, and overall process structure in a clear and concise manner. This visual representation aids in identifying inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement within the process.

What is process mapping, and why do we use it?
Process mapping is a visual representation technique that illustrates the steps, activities, and interactions involved in completing an organization’s process or workflow. It provides a clear and structured depiction of how tasks are performed, the sequence in which they occur, and the relationships between different process elements.
Organizations use process mapping for several reasons:
1. **Clarity and Understanding**: Process mapping helps stakeholders gain a clear understanding of how a process works, including its inputs, outputs, and critical activities. This clarity facilitates communication and alignment among team members, departments, and stakeholders.
2. **Identification of Inefficiencies**: By visually depicting the process flow, organizations can identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, redundancies, and areas for improvement. This enables them to streamline processes, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
3. **Standardization and Consistency**: Process mapping allows organizations to standardize procedures and ensure consistency in performing tasks across different teams or locations. This consistency promotes quality assurance and helps maintain compliance with regulations and standards.
4. **Decision Making**: Process maps provide valuable insights that inform decision-making processes. They enable organizations to identify opportunities for optimization, resource allocation, automation, or restructuring to better align with strategic objectives.
5. **Training and Onboarding**: Process maps serve as valuable training tools for new employees, helping them understand their roles, responsibilities, and how they fit into the broader organizational context. They also facilitate knowledge transfer and continuity during employee transitions.
Process mapping is a powerful tool for enhancing organizational efficiency, improving transparency, fostering collaboration, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. It empowers organizations to visualize, analyze, and optimize their processes to achieve higher levels of performance and success.

Swim lane diagrams helps as visual representation of a visual process. The visual representation helps other, and businesses visualize and conceptualize that data and process the information and the system that the company plans to complete. Swim lane diagrams identifies who does what and in what in a process. The swim lanes also help visualize the order logical and chronological events. They show the order of events that each decision and process happen. Additionally, it shows who the actions are being done by. The swim lanes help in indicating hand offs in a business plan. There are many advantages in using swim lanes diagrams. Some advantages of swim lane diagrams are to help see opportunity for improvements. You can see where the process and decisions go wrong or where a process is the wrong decision. Swim lanes also help eliminating duplications. Additionally, some more advantages for swim lanes are that they are basis for developing new solutions and they are useful training tool.

What is ERD?
ERD stand for Entity Relationship Diagrams. Entity Relationship Diagram is a visual representation of how data relates to each other. Much like system planning and swim lanes ERD’s work as a visual aid to understand how other information works with each other. For some people ERD’s are preferred. The key difference that can be noted between Entity Relationship Diagram and swim lanes are the symbols. In Entity Relationship Diagram’s they use ovals, rectangles and diamonds as entities, attributes and relations. ERD’s also have verbs connecting each other. ERD’s also have specifically lines or crow’s feet for each element within the ERD. Finally, ERD’s hold more managerial information about an entity rather than an action telling a story. They will often hold a location, ID, or registration number needed in relation to the other information.
An easy example of an ERD is linked below~ https://i.ytimg.com/vi/BaN7Ng7a82Y/maxresdefault.jpg
