ERD stands for Entity Relationship Diagram. It is a graphical representation of entities and their relationships to each other.
There are two notations commonly used to create ERDs:
Chen’s notation, which uses rectangles to represent entities and diamond shapes to represent relationships.
Crow’s Foot notation, which uses rectangles to represent entities and lines with “feet” to represent relationships.
The primary symbols in an ERD are:
Rectangles, which represent entities
Diamond shapes, which represent relationships
Lines connecting the shapes, which represent the connections between entities and relationships
Cardinality indicators, which show the number of instances of one entity that are associated with each instance of another entity.
In crow’s foot notation, there are three main types of relationships: one-to-one (1:1), one-to-many (1:N), and many-to-many (M:N). These relationships are represented using different symbols.
1:1 – This relationship indicates that one entity is related to exactly one other entity. This is represented by two entities connected by a single line with a “1” at each end, indicating the number of occurrences of each entity in the relationship.
1:N – This relationship indicates that one entity is related to many other entities. This is represented by one entity (the “1” end) connected to many other entities (the “N” end) by a line with an arrow pointing towards the many entities.
M:N – This relationship indicates that many entities are related to many other entities. This is represented by two entities (the “M” and “N” ends) connected by a double line with arrows pointing towards each other.
Salesforce is a customer relationship management (CRM) platform that helps businesses manage their customer interactions and data. It includes a variety of tools and features such as contact management, sales automation, marketing automation, and analytics.
Dynamic Dashboards are a feature in Salesforce that allows users to create custom dashboards to visualize and track key performance indicators (KPIs) and other important data. These dashboards can be customized with different widgets and charts to display data from various sources, such as Salesforce reports and external data sources. They can also be shared with different teams or individuals, and can be accessed from any device.
There are two types of cardinality in Salesforce: one-to-many and many-to-many.
One-to-many cardinality refers to a relationship where one record in one object is associated with multiple records in another object. For example, one account (object) can be associated with multiple contacts (object).
Many-to-many cardinality refers to a relationship where multiple records in one object are associated with multiple records in another object. For example, multiple products (object) can be associated with multiple orders (object).
Both of these cardinality types are used to create relationships between different objects in Salesforce, allowing users to easily access and analyze data from multiple sources. They are utilized to make it easy to join data between different objects, which can be helpful in creating reports and dashboards.

Hi, Shivam, I think your description of base numbers is very detailed, which allows me to understand the effects of different types of base numbers, and I think it will be very helpful for my future applications.
Isel Sainte says
You made me realize I did not describe what the crow’s feet look like when looking at an ERD. You did an amazing job breaking this down and were very detailed.
Montajim Khan says
Hi Shivam, I liked how you described everything. This is helpful for the future. I almost forgot what a Dynamic Dashboard but reading your post helped me remember. The description of the cardinality also helped. I had a bit of a problem understanding until I read your post. It’s clear to me now what the types of cardinality are.
Justin Bonfiglio says
Hey Shivam,
I would first like to start out in saying that the layout of your answers is fantastic. It is very easy to see each question being answered in order. Second, I can tell you did a lot of research and put a lot of effort into your response, especially the one for relationships in the crow’s foot notation section. I was a little confused even after writing my own answer and doing my own research on it, but your answer completely cleared any confusion up for me and made my understanding on the topic a lot clearer.
Kristina Brown says
Shivam, you did an amazing job at writing all the details in an organized way. You definitely cleared up some of my confusion and I will come back to this again for studying. You definitely added a key detail about the dynamic dashboard that I forgot to mention and explained the cardinality clearly.

The full name of ERD is entity–relationship model, which describes some interrelated things in a specific field. Its two representations are Chen and Crow’s Foot. The main symbols of ERD are rectangles, ovals and diamonds, and rectangles represent entity types. , ovals represent attributes, and diamonds represent relationships. I think the main difference is that crow’s foot notation uses multiple compulsions to summarize many things. ERD tables show the basic structure of a data. Salesforce is a crm platform that can link company and customer data together for the convenience of managers. Make a decision accordingly. Dynamic Dashboards is a convenient program to view past data through a program. It is a convenient program in salesforce. There are three types of cardinality, 1-to-many, one-to-one, and many-to-many. It is necessary to decide which base to use to operate according to the actual data type and the scale of the data to be classified.
Isel Sainte says
When describing Salesforce do you think it is just for the convenience of Managers? I ask because in the Max Labs it seems to be convenient for Max as well…do you agree?
Montajim Khan says
Hi Jinzhou, I like your example of the difference between Chen and crow foot “uses multiple compulsions to summary many things” that’s the best way to describe it.
Nicholas DiGiuseppe says
Hi Jinzhou,
Excellent job at explaining the symbols of ERD. Using the shapes for representation I feel makes it easier to understand/apply. Also, do you have an opinion as to which of the three types of cardinality you prefer using?
Ishaan Joshi says
Hello Jinzhou, I love your mention of dynamic dashboards because I also believe that it is a very convenient program. It is a central location wherever important information can be accessed among many types of stakeholders so I think that Salesforce did a great job at implementing this into their database. Also a great down breaking down ERDs and how they are represented.
Montajim Khan says
ERD, also known as Entity Relationship Diagram, is a visual representation of different data to describe how they are related. The two notions for ERD are Chen’s and Crow’s. Chen uses rectangles and diamonds to show a relationship, and Crow uses rectangles to connect to another rectangle to show a relationship. There are three primary symbols for ERD: entity, attribute, and relationship. The entity uses nouns, Attribute uses adjectives or characteristics, and relationships use verbs. The three crow’s foot notation is 1:1, which is a “one-to-one relationship,” 1:m is “one to many,” is to many relationships, and last is m:m, a “many-to-many relationship” this help describe the characteristic of the relationship between two entities. I think the key thing of an ERD table is to label if you don’t label your boxes and lines, you might end up lost. Or make sure you’re using the right Chen’s or crowfoot notion for your ERD table. I think Salesforce is a site that helps us control a business, such as marketing, sales, and services. But if we’re getting a bit technical, according to Salesforce, “a company that makes cloud-based software designed to help business find more prospects, close more deals, and wow customers with amazing service.” I think learning Salesforce is a great tool for entering the business world and learning new ways to communicate with your customers and sell products.

Sophie Chen says
Hi Montajim,
I definitely agree with you that the key idea of an ERD table is to label. The more specific information you can include in each entity, the easier it is for another person who does not know the process to read and understand the diagram. For people not familiar with the Crow’s Foot notation, I think Chen’s notation is easier to grasp, but I feel that Crow’s Foot tends to be more organized, especially when you start adding more entities. You are definitely correct in that if boxes are not label correctly or clearly, an outside viewer can quickly become lost in trying to piece together relationships.
Julia Grugan says
Hi Montajim, I liked how you used the parts of speech to refer to the symbols in an ERD, it made it easy to remember! I agree, I think it may be difficult to keep the different notation styles straight. Do you have any methods that you like to use to differentiate between the two?
Assia Snineh says
Hey Montajim,
i like how you also included a website to help someone better understand Salesforce. You explained Salesforce very well and explained the use and benefits of it!

Justin Bonfiglio says
An ERD is an entity relationship diagram that shows the relationship between everyone/everything involved. There are two notations for ERDs, which are Chen and Crow’s Foot notation. Chen’s notation represents a relationship with a diamond and a entity with a rectangle. Crow’s Foot notation represents entities as boxes and relationships as lines going in between the different entity boxes. The three primary symbols in ERDs are entity, attribute, and relationship. Entity is represented through rectangles, attributes are represented through ovals, and a relationship is represented with either diamonds or lines. The different types or relationships commonly seen in crow’s foot notation are one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many. One-to-one is one entity relates to one other entity, one-to-many is one entity relates to many other entities, and many-to-many is when many entities related to many other entities in a system. An example of using ERDs or collecting data is when we used Salesforce. Salesforce is a customer relationship managing platform or a CRM for short. It is used to allow businesses to easily mange their customers data all in one place. It can be very useful, as it can help automate the process of collecting data and keep all important information in one location. A feature on Salesforce is the Dynamic Dashboards. This is a way to visually represent sales data and allow only certain people to see certain important information like previous sales pitches/meetings with possible customers.
Julia Grugan says
Hi Justin, thanks for your post! I had a question; do you have an example of when we may have used the dashboards in salesforce? I am not sure I entirely understand what the dashboards are, and I was wondering if we created or utilized a dashboard in our Max labs. If not, are reports similar?
Sophie Chen says
ERD stands for Entity Relationship Diagram, and is typically used for database design to visualize the relationship between entities (people, things, concepts, etc.).
The two notations for ERDs are
1. Chen’s
2. Crow’s Foot
Chen’s notation – The Chen ERD is the traditional method of creating ERDs. Unlike Crow’s feet, all the entities are represented by different symbols and connected by the same connection notation. While cardinality notations may vary based on the design, the basic symbols and how they are all connected stay relatively the same.
Crow’s Foot notation – Similarly to Chen’s, Crow’s Foot serves the purpose to also illustrate entities and their relationships. However, the way in which relationships are connected depends to cardinality and which is the parent entity. For example, when connecting a child entity that only has one parent entity, there will be a small circle at the opposite end of the connecting line from the child. Relationships can have cardinalities of one-to-one, one-to-many, or many-to-many. The illustration of the connecting line will tell the viewer how entities are connected and from what angle.
I think this resource does a really great job of listing the different notations of each ERD since there are quite a few symbols to remember, especially for Crow’s Foot. (https://www.conceptdraw.com/How-To-Guide/notation-symbols-for-erd#:~:text=There%20are%20used%202%20types,notations%3A%20Chen%20and%20Crow's%20Foot. )
Although Crow’s Foot notation has more symbols to memorize and remember, I personally find it more organized than Chen’s notation because there are less entities to look at. If you know the Crow Foot notation key, it is easy to visualize the data as well as quickly find pieces of information.
Sheree Owens says
Hey Sophie! I think this was a great explanation of defining how Chen’s notation and Crow’s Foot notation are similar and how they differ. Chen’s notation is great for ERD Diagrams and ERD symbols and I agree ERD symbols help simplify interpreting the visual diagram. Crow’s Foot gives a more in-depth breakdown of how the data is related to each other through ERD tables and cardinality in data modeling.
Assia Snineh says
Hey Sophie,
You explained the difference between Crow’s food notation and Chen’s notation very well. It was very resourceful to add the link to teach someone how to do notation symbols for ERD!

Salesforce is a great platform to deliver cloud-based system products. It is a technology that enables organizations to work faster, smarter, and more efficiently. It enables and enhances businesses by easily managing client data. It is a great resource to use for account management, creating pipelines for sales metrics, and communicating with your team all on one platform. Through learning more about Salesforce from our lab assignments I can see how beneficial the tool can be for businesses. I have a better understanding of how different industries would apply a system like Salesforce to their organization. As a business professional, I’ve used Dynamics 365 but can see how the Salesforce CRM tool is more seamless. It is a better automation process for keeping up to date with customers through email outreach and prospecting. It is also great for collaborating with management and peers to hit sales goals.

An Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is a type of diagram that can be used to see how different entities (such as people, customers, and other objects) are related to each other within an application or database. They are created when designing a new system so that the development team can understand the structure of the database. It can also build on existing systems to help teams understand how systems work and find and fix problems. Entity-relationship diagrams use a specific set of symbols, Rectangles, which represent entities Diamond represent relationships, Lines connecting the shapes, which represent the connections between entities and relationships. In Chen’s notation, relationships are represented by diamond shapes, whereas entities are represented by rectangles.
Crow’s Foot notation, which use rectangles to symbolize objects and lines with feet to symbolize connections. With a Salesforce dynamic dashboard, you can display important data to a variety of stakeholders, including employees, clients, and managers. Salesforce dashboards can be configured with numerous tools and graphs. they are accessible from any device smartphone, computer, etc.

An Entity Relationship (ER) Diagram is a type of flowchart that shows how “entities” in a system, such as people, objects, or concepts, interact with one another. ER Diagrams are most commonly used in the fields of software engineering, business information systems, education, and research to design or debug relational databases. The 2 most used types of ERD notations are Chen and Crow’s Foot. Entity-relationship diagrams are a useful tool for database design. They depict the entities involved, their characteristics, and their interrelationships. You must define these elements before you can properly understand the structure of the database. Dynamic dashboards are real-time, personalized, multi-user platforms that allow organizations to seamlessly add new business intelligence content while also updating existing data. A fundamental relationship between two entities or objects is described by cardinality. One-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many are the three relationship types or cardinalities. Entity-Relationship (ER) diagrams are used in databases to describe cardinality.

The relationship could be one-to one, one-to-many, or many-to-many. The two notations for the ERDs: Chen Notation and Crow’s foot notation. The Chen Notation is considered the original for ERDs. The Crows foot notation uses more complex symbols, such as three parallel lines for a many-to-many relationship and to represent the relationship between entities. Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is a diagram used for construction of database. Entity Relationship Diagram labels and manages each stakeholder and arranges them in the database for easier access. An Entity Relationship Diagram also connects those stakeholders and displays relationships of these stakeholders between each other. For software system, such database in crucial part for its daily operations. In software development, ERD can also have another names, such as ER Diagram or ER model. In those diagrams, we observe major entities in the system, attributes of these entities and the inner relationships between these entities. Typically, there are three types of entity relationship diagrams: conceptual, logical and physical. During creation of ERD, we must have a clear vision and understanding of what is the purpose of this database. Next, we must identify all stakeholders and label them as entities. After that, we must give each entity attributes. And lastly, we must determine and label the relationship between these entities.

Salesforce is a CRM or customer relationship management that helps companies build relationships with future clients to make a potential deal. It has the ability to produce scalability and customization. Scalability basically means how much this software will invest in the future, So, whether it is looking after a company’s current customer relationships or looking after a customer base that builds over the next five years, Salesforce has the capacity and ability to scale up. So far, we used Salesforce to practice building relationships with clients for the future. We also practiced to see how exactly the software works and how to create certain panels on the website. At first it took a while to use, but then I got used to it after about 3 attempts at it. My impression of salesforce is that it is one of the best platform tools to use for a business or job that you may have.

After watching the Bloomberg video about how AI affects people when it comes to finding a job, I realized how important of an issue this is, which I’m willing to bet the overwhelming majority of people are probably unaware of. Even I was unaware of AI’s increasing role in the job application process. 99% of Fortune 100 companies use AI in hiring processes. That’s crazy. On the one hand, I understand some of the clear benefits of using technology, and, more specifically, using AI helps companies. It saves money, saves time, streamlines the process, makes it easier to keep track of everything, and, in general, it makes the hiring process much more efficient, but there are some clear downsides too. For example, one type of AI is machine learning, which means uploading a bunch of past data to let the technology learn and recognize patterns. This process essentially involves little to no interaction with humans. Unfortunately, AI can be biased using this process based on the simplest things like your name and what kind of vocabulary you use on your Resume. This could lead to your Resume being declined by AI even before someone saw it in the HR Department. That’s ridiculous, in my opinion. Another big concern is privacy and the violation of anti-discrimination laws. What do you think we should do to solve this problem? We need some sort of government regulations in place on the local, state, or federal level.

Entity Relationship Diagram, or an ERD, is a type of structural diagram, This diagram is used for database design and contains different symbols and connectors to visualize important information. This information displayed is the major entities within the system scope, and the inter-relationships among these entities. ERD are typically made to help a business document existing databases in order to figure out problems and spot inefficiencies to improve business processes. An ERD has 3 symbols that embodies a diagram, a rectangle for the entity (noun), an oval for the attribute (adjective), and a diamond for the relationship (verb). The two notations used for ERDs are Crow’s Foot and Chen. Cardinality is the number of values in a set when it comes to ERDs. Cardinality as three forms which are one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many. One-to-one is when the relationship is from one entity to one entity. One-to-many is when the relationship is between one entity to many entities. Finally, many-to-many is the relationship between many entities to many entities.

An Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is a graphical representation of a database system that illustrates the relationships between entities or concepts within that system. It typically shows the components of the system and the relationships among different parts of the system, such as entities, attributes, relationships, and constraints. ERDs can be used to design a database or to analyze and improve an existing one.
The two notations for ERD’s are Chen’s notation and Crow’s Foot notation.
The primary symbols in literature refer to an object, image, word, or action that has its own meaning and can be used to represent an abstract idea. Examples of primary symbols include a rose for love, a dove for peace, a book for knowledge, and a cross for faith.
The different relationships in crow’s foot notation are one-to-one (1:1), one-to-many (1:N), and many-to-many (N:N).
The 1:1 relationship is indicated by a single line connecting two entities, while the 1:N relationship is indicated by a line connecting one entity to another with an arrowhead at the end of the line pointing to the entity on the other side. The N:N relationship is indicated by two lines with a crow’s foot at the junction of the two lines, indicating that many instances of one entity.

1. One-one (1:1) cardinality: This type of cardinality is the most basic relationship, representing a single record in one table that corresponds to a single record in another table. This relationship is typically utilized to build associations between two tables by establishing a primary/foreign key relationship.
2. One-many (1:N) cardinality: This type of cardinality is used to create relationships between two tables, where one table has multiple related records in the second table. This relationship is typically used in more complicated database structures, and one table will contain a foreign key field which will link it

What is an ERD?
An Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is an illustration of a flowchart that represents people, objects, ot concepts that relate to each other within a system. They are usually used to design databases intn specific jobs, businesses, use it for research. In an ERD you use symbols such as rectangles, diamonds, ovals, and connecting lines to connect each entity together whether that is what they do or the relationship. ERD’s can help businesses document their databases so it will cause less problems, inefficiencies, and help improve processes within the entity. ERDs help visualize how data is connected in a general less complicated way, it makes the process easier to understand. You can use ERD’s for many relationships whether that be, a one to one relationship, a one to many relationship, or a many to many relationship. All these relationships help define attributes within the entity more clearly. Down below is a link that shows an example of an ERD diagram.

Hello everyone,
When we are interested in having a visual representation to showcase how different data are related, then we refer to the Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD). There are three main symbols that we refer to when discussing ERD: Attribute, entity, and relationship. Adjectives go with attribute, nouns go with entity, and verbs go with relationships. The two representatives of ERD are Crow’s Foot and Chen. Kind of like in swim lane diagrams, we are using symbols like the rectangles and diamonds in order to appropriately represent the different types. Crows Foot notation uses more of the complex symbols to represent relationships between entities. Salesforce is one of the greatest tools to practice using when you want to build relationships with clients. It is also extremely useful for building customer relationships over the course of many years. Salesforce is a highly recommended tool to use in any job or business that you may have.
Robert DiBrino says
Hi Nicholas! I really enjoyed your reference to from the Crow’s Foot and Chen to the Swim Lane Diagrams. I personally find visual diagrams to be extremely helpful, as I am a visual learner. Being able to see how things relate to one another further helps me to understand the project, task at hand and the decision that needs to be made.

Hello class,
Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is a visual graphic illustration of entities and their relationship together. These illustrations come in two different notations. First, Chen’s notation where entities, attribute and relationship are representation of noun, adjective and verb respectively. Second, Crow’s Foot notation where graphical symbols are used to indicate the multiple sides of relationships. There are three main types of relationships in Crow’s Foot notation. These are one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many.
Salesforce is a cloud-based software that designed to connect businesses with their customers and improve internal communication. The dashboard in Salesforce provides key information needed by the user. This dashboard is highly customized to suit the needs of each user. Users can select different sections of the dashboard to take them to that particular task.
Robert DiBrino says
An ERD is an Entity-Relationship Diagram. This diagram is a tool that can be used to identify the relationship between certain entities. These entities include things such as people, things, or concepts within a database. This diagram can prove to be useful for businesses as it helps to demonstrate the existing database, provides a visual aid for bug fixes, and provides a road map to design from as a new database or even update the old one. Within this diagram there are a few common symbols, they are:
Entities: represented by rectangles, and is an object or concept
Relationships: represented by diamonds, shows how two things share information
Attributes:represented by ovals, a characteristic of an entity (i.e. social security number, etc.)
Connecting Lines: solid lines connecting attributes and entities
Cardinality: the number attributed to the relationship. (i.e. one-to-one, many-to-one, etc.)
Furthermore, there are three types of ERD models.
Conceptual ERD: includes the entity and relationship
Logical ERD: includes the entity, relationship, and attribute
Physical ERD: includes the entity, relationship, attribute, attribute types and key.
The determination on which model is used is based on the businesses needs. If a business is looking for a high level view of a project, a conceptual ERD will likely be used. If a business is looking for a ground level view with technical details, a physical ERD would be the most useful choice.
Aidan Morgan says
Hi Robert, I really appreciated how you broke down different aspects of ERD diagrams piece by piece here. With you separating different types of ERDs and the symbols they hold, it gave me a better understanding on how to utilize them and read them. I also liked how you broke down the 3 types of ERD models as sometimes I did get confused with the differences of the 3 and when they need to be used.
Paige Willis says
Simply put, and ERD, or entity relationship diagram, is defined as modeling technique composed of “entities” and their relationships to one another within a databse. Each entity has defined attributes, and can be anything from a person to a concept. The primary symbols for an ERD to represent relationships between entities, and attributes are the rectangle, diamond, and lines. The rectangle represents the type of entity it is. The diamond represent the type of relationship it is. Finally, the type of line links entities, relationships, and attributes to their respective correspondence. The type of line depends on the relationship cardinality.
There are two different types of ntoations for ERD’s which include “Chen” and “Crows foot”. With a Chen ERD, you use a diamond and connecting lines to represent a relationship between entities. With Crows foot, it just uses lines and symbols.
Anthony Marquis says
An ERD or in other words, an Entity Relationship Program, is a model or diagram that is used in database designing. The two main notations for creating an ERD include Chen notation and Crow foot nation and Crow foot nation had actually originated from Chen notation. The main attributes for an ERD include lines, diamonds, and rectangles. The different relationships in Crows foot nation incudes a one and a mandatory relationship that is represented by a straight line perpendicular to the relationship line. In Crows foot nation, the type of line links entities, relationships, and attributes to their respective correspondence.

An Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) is a visual representation of different data using conventions that describe how these data are related. The two notations are Chen and Crow’s Foot. Chen is a diamond that connects lines through symbols. Crow’s foot has lines with symbols at the end. Entities are rectangles and are represented by an object or person. Attributes are circles that a characteristic can define, and relationships are labeled on the line and describe the interaction between two entities. Crow’s foot notation relationships are one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many. One-to-one is represented by a single line with a one on each side, one-to-many is a line with an arrow, and many-to-many is a double line with hands pointed in the same direction. Salesforce is software designed to help businesses manage data and use it to help customers provide their needs in the best way possible. As described by Salesforce itself, it is designed to be a customer first company.

An ERD is an entity relationship diagram. An Entity relationship diagram represents different data and how they corelate to one another. There are two notions used to create an ERD, the first being Crow’s foot notation. Crow’s foot notation uses rectangles to represent the entities of the diagram and lines to show the relationship. Within this diagram the use of mathematical symbols on the relationship lines describe if the relationship is 1 to 1, or 1 to many. Chen’s notation of an Entity relationship diagram uses shapes to indicate what the entity represents. The rectangles represent an entity and the diamonds represent relationships. Chen’s notation also uses a circle to represent a start or end. Dynamic dashboards are useful as they help to view data in a simple way. Salesforce uses this software to conveniently represent data visually.
