What is a Digital Identity? 2b

Robert DiBrino - March 2, 2023 4 Comments

A digital identity relates to a person’s online presence and personal identifiers. You will of course find information that builds this identity through online shopping, email subscriptions, etc. However, I am in a position that may be different from others in this class and also within my own generation. When searching for my name, the thing that will come up is my LinkedIn profile. Here you will learn about my education and professional experiences. However, outside of that, you will not find a lot. I do not have a Facebook, Instagram, twitter, etc. While I do see the benefits of having a digital presence, I made the personal choice to not have social media due to the negative impacts that it can have. Within the accounts that I do have, I create very complex and custom passwords in an attempt to avoid fraud. I do find at times that I am not “in the loop” on certain news items or current events with the news not being at my fingertips in a quick tweet or Instagram post, but overwhelmingly I have found this to be a great lifestyle choice. On my LinkedIn profile, the small part of the digital identity I do have, I like to manage this by liking and reposting the posts of others, as well as restricting those who I connect with. This helps me to continue to grow my professional network and build my resume. In turn, it is my hope that upon graduation, the network that I have built will aid me in pursuing my career or choice.

I think that digital Identity is very important as well. Not only does it set you up on professional networks like linkedin, but it sets you up for quality social status.

You are definitely doing all the right things to protect your digital identity as well as creating a digital identity that will further you professionally. I also find it incredible that you did not have social media haha, because I definitely spend way too much time on mine and I wish I was focusing that energy somewhere else! I have no doubt that you are and will continue to build an excellent professional network by the time you graduate!

Hi Robert. There’s nothing wrong with not having much of a social media presence. It’s definitely makes it easier to protect yourself online. You have very good practices to protect your digital identity. I need to make some improvements with some of my passwords. I noticed when we did the cybersecurity assignment that my accounts have been breached quite a bit, which is scary to know. Your post was very insightful. Thank you!

Greetings Robert, You are certainly taking appropriate measures to safeguard your digital identity while also establishing a digital persona that will benefit your professional growth. It’s amazing that you haven’t used social media yet, whereas I tend to spend an excessive amount of time on it and wish I could channel that energy elsewhere. I’m confident that you’ll build a strong professional network by the time you complete your studies.
