Weekly Blog Post Discussion 1b: Swim Lane Symbols Explained:

Ryan Scharko - January 22, 2023 2 Comments

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in the case of swim lanes they could be worth an infinite amount of words because the diagram shows the procedure and rules of a system for a company or anything you could think of that needs a system. The swim lane is used by many to summarize a procedure and its rules in the simplest way possible, but with that swim lane comes rules for how to properly draw one. The swim lane has 5 symbols, which are a circle, rectangle, diamond, arrow and cylinder. The circle means start/end of the process, a rectangle means an activity in progress, a diamond means a decision must be made, an arrow means the flow of a process, and the cylinder represents data is being stored. Lastly there are also those characters who are involved in a system called actors. An actor could be a manager, delivery driver or whoever is needed to help complete the process and make decisions.

Weekly Blog Post 1a: The goals of system Analysis

Ryan Scharko - January 22, 2023 1 Comment

To start a system is usually a collection of parts working together as part of a network or a machine to achieve a goal or a set of rules and procedures to instruct on how something is to be completed. Now that is a very loose definition of a system, but system analysis is where data is collected on those systems mentioned above and analyzed to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of the systems. System analysis is becoming a vital part of companies because technology is becoming a bigger part of companies than ever before because technology helps business run more efficiently and effectively. When a company uses system analysis they are generally looking answers to questions such as if the system they are currently using is efficient and effective, or maybe there is a need for a whole new system to be created because the current one is no longer viable to be fixed. Companies have tons of systems in place that are constantly analyzed with the overall goal to improve the company’s efficiency.

Waterfall Vs. Agile

Cassidy Mantle - January 22, 2023 2 Comments

The main difference between agile sdlc and waterfall is how each cycle breaks down and develops. Waterfall isolates each phase of its software development which corresponds with one another while Agile advocates for the development of parallel lifecycle phases which correspond with one another as multiples. Mainly Agile sdlc requires its team to complete project phases before advancing towards the next step/phase versus agile which is more individual based in a sense where it advocates for individuals to work on their portions of the project simultaneously. MIS specifically stands for Management information systems. In a sense when people think of management information systems, they think of systems and how people can manage certain information in one setting such as collecting data and organizing a date base. Many different systems/methods help individuals record and keep track of data, but most major institutions or organizations use technology to organize and hold their data in one safe place. Therefore Data bases are a large aspect of MIS since it is a form of managing information for a tech based system or system in general.

The Swim Lane Actors are not supposed to have names. The third Actor includes his name and should just say, Manager. The start and end of this process symbols are rectangles instead of circles. In Actor John Smith, Stock Managers lane the decision that asks if the item is in stock or not does not have a process for if the item is not in stock. The arrow should be pointing toward the customer, and it should say notify the customer. In that same lane deliver is in a cylinder and should be rectangle because no data is identified as being stored.

A system that is involved in my everyday life is an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). This system makes the process of hiring a candidate smooth. It is a system that I use to recruit candidates for positions I have open. I create a Requisition and post a job ad, which allows the applicant to apply to the position they are interested in. I review applicants’ credentials to make sure they meet the requirements and if they do interview them. When scheduling the interview, I can email the candidate right in the system. I do not need to open Outlook. Once interviewed and I determine the applicant is a good match. Then, I use that same system to initiate onboarding paperwork. Once it is complete and I can update either profile to hired.
