-An ERD is a way to display how the data in a process relates to one another, and provides a way for the viewer to differentiate between different types of data, such as entities, attributes, and relationships.
-ERD’s are notated through either Chen’s Database Notation, or through Crow’s Foot Database Notation.
-For an entity, the primary symbol is a blue rectangle. For attributes, the primary symbol is a yellow oval. For relationships, the primary symbol is a gray diamond.
-In crow’s foot notation, the relationships can be described as one to one, one to many, and many to many. A one to one relationship is expressed as closed on both ends- there is only one option for either end of the transaction. A one to many relationship is expressed with one of the ends of the relationship being open-ended, and one being closed. A many to many relationship is expressed with both ends being open-ended for multiple values possibilities.
-ERD tables utilize the verb on the arrow that goes between boxes. The entity is shown at the top of the table, and the attributes to this are listed within the boxes.
-Salesforce is a program that allows businesses/individuals to create their own systems for users/customers to utilize their product.
-In Salesforce, a user can create a specific program/dashboard that allows others to access the same program. The user can enter information and search by this information, and can add filters and change the available information to create a comprehensive analysis of said information.
-The three types of cardinality are one to one, one to many, and many to many.
-Your digital identity is who you are on the internet and what you present to the online community. The identity is mismanaged through promotion, authentication, privacy, security, reputation, and networks.
-It is important to have a good digital identity in order to build your professional reputation, and to connect with others in relevant settings.
-The community platform integrates web, professional development, and coursework. It allows for social exchanges, collaboration, and digital branding through websites, e-portfolios, professional programs, and courses.
-The purpose of building an e-portfolio is to be able to share your works with others in your field to create a professional network among peers.

Hi Oceana,
I agree with your response to what Digital Identity is. Like you mentioned, it is basically who you are on the Internet. It is also gathered information about you that is being displayed online. It is important to be careful with what you want shown on the Internet because any information that is posted, it will stay there permanently and there really is no way to delete that information.
Anthony Rosado says
Hi Oceana,
Great post. The digital identity is one that I feel is underestimated by. some. This is many times the only impression that employers have of you, I like your recommendation to have a good digital identity in order to build a professional reputation.
Adelina Chornodola says
Hi Oceana, I definitely agree with you on why its important to have a digital identity, I wrote similar points as your digital identity can be accessed by everyone, and especially employers so building your professional reputation online is the key now and especially in the future. Also e-portfolio helps you network and if somebody searches something in the create that you have, it will build relationships.
Alexander Neff says
Hey Oceana,
I really like your purpose for building a e-portfolio. Not only is an e-portfolio important to let potential employers know who you are, but I also great at creating a professional network among peers. Great stuff!

– An ERD, known as an Entity Relationship Diagram, is defined in the powerpoint as “a visual representation of different data using conventions that describe how these data are related to each other.”
– The two notations for ERD’s are Chen and Crow’s foot.
– The primary ERD symbols are an entity, attribute, and relationship, those being a rectangle, an oval, and a diamond, respectively.
– The different relationships in Crow’s Foot notation are a one-to-one relationship, a one-to-many relationship, and a many-to-many relationship. A one-to-one relationship is expressed as a horizontal line with a small, vertical line crossing over on each side of the line. A one-to-many relationship is expressed as a horizontal line with a vertical line crossing on one side, and three lines shooting out on the other side to symbolize the “many” in “one-to-many.” A many-to-many relationship is expressed as a line with three lines shooting out on each side. Each relationship notation may include a small circle, which indicates a null value.
– A key thing about ERD tables are that each component must reach the next component before moving on, as well as that the notation that connects each component is drawn out to symbolize the relationships between them.
– Salesforce is a cloud-based software company that helps businesses in customer relationship management.
– Dynamic Dashboards are dashboards that allow for use between multiple users, as opposed to a singular user. Dashboards are Salesforce graphics that are designed to show data from reports within Salesforce.
– The three types of cardinality are the one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many relationships.
– A person’s digital identity is the online collection of information about that person. To manage that identity, a person can add layers of protection to their online presence, such as anti-virus software and proper passwords.
– It is important to have a good digital identity to be able to establish a connection with others online, whether it be personal or business related.
– The MIS community platform is a website built upon WordPress, and is the central hub for MIS classes at Temple.
– The purpose of building an e-portfolio is to create a collection of online work, as well as to create a connection between others online.

Hi David,
I agree with your response to the last question on what an e-portfolio is. To add on to what you said, e-portfolios are a great way to send information about you to a specific job you are applying for so companies or businesses know what you have accomplished and what are you capable of doing. This can also apply to college applications.
Anthony Rosado says
Hi David,
Salesforce has many benefits and is revolutionizing the systems industry. I particularly like the dynamic reporting. This is a great way to display data gathered in the tool to multiple users.

I like how you wrote that building an e-portfolio demonstrates your experience, e-portfolio makes it easier to share your information when networking.
Anna Bauza says
Hey Anthony:
Not only does having good digital identity good for employment but it helps to identify who you are for verification purposes since identities can be stolen online by hackers or scammers. I’ve had to do personal verifications for loans and other personal matters and it blows my mind how they know where I lived 15 years ago, what my mother’s maiden name is. It lists the question, “which address have you lived in” and it lists a few and you have to select which is the correct one. They have this information stored about me. Nothing is private anymore.

Brian Johnson says
Hi Adelina, I agree with what you said about having a good digital identity, I think it’s very important to make a good impression, especially in the business world. The more information you have about yourself than the more business your making and the more money you are earning.

An ERD is a visual presentation of data that describes how the data is related to each other.
Chen’s Database Notation and Crow’s Foot Database Notation.
The primary symbols are a rectangle represents an entity, and/or noun, a circle represents an attribute and/or adjective/characteristic, a diamond represents a relationship and/or verb.
Crow’s foot notation relationships are one to one, one to many or many to many. A customer to a zero transaction or a customer to one transaction.
Three key ERDs regarding tables are entities, attributes, and relationships. Entities are represented by objects, person, concepts, or events.
Salesforce is a cloud-based company that is used worldwide by industry 100 businesses for marketing, sales, customer service, in assisting with reaching their goals for growth, organization and increase in revenue.
Dynamic Dashboards provides access to multiple users and not just one user as well as being able to be used by one individual and another one who is logged onto the system. The dashboard also displays specific data needed by the users.
The three types of cardinalities are: one to one relationship, one to many relationships and many to many relationships.
Your digital identity is your personal information that’s on the web which is the data created from your online usage. You can manage your digital identity by using an encrypted connection, use a VPN to hide and encrypt your data, and changing your passwords periodically that are complicated.
It’s important to have a good digital identity because many services, and products, are used to access personal companies, governmental information, banking, and employers require you to access online systems as well as verifying who you are based on your online data that is kept on an individual.
The MIS community platform is the digital online page which students use to obtain their online videos, assignments made available by the professors for learning and communicating.
Cassadi Gallagher says
Hi Anna,
I think you did great answer the questions. I especially like your tips for managing digital identity. Before this class, I thought using a VPN was some super advanced technology that I’d never understand. Now, I’m definitely going to look into using one to manage my digital identity.
Christopher Elko says
Hello Anna, I like your post and while I won’t pretend to be an expert in VPN’s or digital data, I’ve heard that most publicly purchasable VPN’s are really just as bad as going in unprotected. Apparently its something you’re capable (if you’re a real programmer) of making yourself, and these ones readily available for purchase are just as bad, because they still ‘have’ your data, and they then do what they want with it behind your back. So I’ve heard.
Satish Mishra says
1. An entity relationship diagram (ERD), also known as an entity relationship model, is a graphical depiction of the relationships that exist between people, things, locations, concepts, or events in an information technology (IT) system.
2. The two notations for ERD’s are Chen’s database notation and Crow database notation.
3. For entity it’s blue rectangle- Noun: Shopper for example shopper, item. For Attribute it’s a yellow circle- Adjective/Characteristics for example item price. For relationship it’s a grey diamond- Verb for example buys.
4. In crows foot notation it is divided into three parts. 1st is one to zero or one relationship is expressed as closed on both sides. 2nd one to zero or many is expressed as one side is closed and other side is opened. 3rd many to zero or many is expressed as both sides are open.
5. Relationship example verb is written on the arrow. Entity listed at the top of the table. Attributes are listed under the entity.
6. Salesforce is a B2B organization that specializes in providing superior Customer Relationship Management solutions to their clients’ sales teams. It is well-known for its outstanding CRM efforts. Because of their robust Value chain, they are extremely important to both businesses and customers.
7. A dynamic dashboard is one that automatically refreshes with real-time data. When a project schedule or record is changed, any dashboard that relies on that information is updated. Every time, we get real-time information. This is distinct from non-dynamic, static dashboards, such as those created in a spreadsheet for an executive summary report.
8. The three types of cardinality are one to one, one to many, and many to many.
9. A digital identity is reusable digital evidence of identity issued by a trustworthy authority with a predetermined level of certainty. Updating our User Profiles and Accounts allows us to control our digital identity. By conducting a name search. We may learn what information has been published about us by researching our digital identity.
10. A solid digital identity is vital for safety since those who know your personal information can open accounts in your name. Alternatively, if they know where you live, they can find you. Not everyone on the internet is trustworthy.
11. A MIS community platform enables the creation of a safe and secure online environment in which members may communicate with one another and with the organization, exchange expertise, assist one another, and build useful networks. A community platform is software that allows you to construct an online community.
12. The process of creating an e-portfolio might alter our perception of ourselves. Creating an e-portfolio can help us become a better student, a deeper thinker, a more succinct communicator, and, maybe, a better understanding of ourselves as a person.
Ashanna Khan says
Satish, you did a great job at answering these questions. You’ve provided clear and concise answers and explanations for a better understanding. I think your point of conducting our own name search to see what’s been published is very important.
Olivia Jardel says
Satish,
I agree with you on your comment about how the MIS platform is a safe and secure community platform. I have never used this type of platform in an online learning environment before and it is very helpful, while feeling a sense of community at the same time.
Brian Johnson says
Hi Satish, I like how you described the benefits of having an e-portfolio. I found it interesting how you put it in a non business aspect by saying that it creates a better understanding of ourselves as people. I also think that it also more easier to be organized with an e-portfolio account.
Oceana Gilkerson-Heinaman says
Satish, I like that you brought up the importance of name searches online. I remember this being one of the more significant things that we were told even in high school- to look ourselves up and see what others might see about us. I think that the process of creating an e-portfolio can also alter the perceptions that others have of us. It gives us a sort of control of what other professionals see of us.
Alexander Neff says
ERD stands for Entity Relationship Diagram. It provides the flow of information and what data is needed in relationship to one another. The main notations in ERD are the lines between the entity. There can be a one to one relationship, one to many, or many to many relationships throughout the diagram also called crows foot notation or cardinality points. The primary symbols in the ERD are the rectangle representing the entity, a circle representing the attribute, and the diamond representing the relationship. There is a primary key in every entity; something that is specific to the entity requesting the information. This is called the Primary Key.
Salesforce is a customer relationship manager that can also provide statistics and help organizations make clear decisions on sales and marketing. It is also considered a dynamic dashboard that provides access to multiple users.
Social media considered your digital identity. It is your own personal brand that employers look at to see if you might be the right fit for the company. Through building an e-portfolio, employers are able to gauge what kind of person you might be.
Satish Mishra says
Hello, Alexander. I really enjoy your comments on digital identity, especially how social media is considered our digital identity, and how it is our own personal brand that companies look at to determine whether we are a good match for the firm. It’s amusing how everyone has a different perspective on digital identification. I read a few posts, and everyone had a different take on digital identity.
Kevin Desouza says
Social media is just one facet of your digital identity. Other facets would be financial information such as credit history and past purchases. A digital identity really is your footprint online, from the places you go, the things you tweet/like about, to the schools you went to. This footprint is also how businesses can target a specific product to you.

11. The MIS community platform is a student professional development and learning management system that fundamentally transforms how students, alumni, faculty, staff, and industry partners interact.
12. E-portfolios aid in metacognition by providing students a space to pause and reflect on learning and how to transfer it to future contexts.
Cassadi Gallagher says
Hi Ashana, I like how you included the one to zero or one relationship for cardinality. I also thought the way you explained a digital identity really interesting. It definitely helps me makes sense of digital identity. It is basically the identity your computer/phone/etc has given you based on the data they collected.
Satish Mishra says
Hello there, Ashanna. I absolutely appreciate your perspective on digital identity. and extremely precise in maintaining our digital identities by securing our social security numbers and selecting secure passwords.
Brandon Lee says
Hi Ashanna, I really liked how you explained what the Dynamic Dashboard is and how it is able to be accessed by multiple users after it was first introduced by a static user. Very great detail in explaining this!

1. An ERD, or Entity Relationship Diagram, is a visual representation of data, and it shows how they are related.
2. The two notations for ERD’s are Crows foot, which is like two squares with lists of attributes and a line to connect them. The other notation is Chen’s Database, which has shapes to symbolize different data types.
3. The primary symbols are entity, which is shown as a square in Chen’s Database. It is a noun, such as shopper; attribute is shown as an oval, and it is an adjective or characteristic, such as item price; relationship is shown as a diamond and it is a verb,, such as buys.
4. The different relationships in crow foot notation are 1 to 1, 1 to many, and many to many. You express these relationships with a straight line and a perpendicular line at each end for 1 to 1, a straight line with a perpendicular line at one end and three lines (crows foot) at the opposite end for 1 to many, and a stright line with three lines (crows feet) at each end to show many to many.
5. Some key things to remember about ERD tables is the three notations for crows foot, the primary symbols, and that a circle at the end means the valueis null.
6. Salesforce is a cloud based Digital Product Management tool. It enables and enhances business and is used by industry professionals across all functional areas of business.
7. Dynamic dashboards are ones that update with real-time data, rather than showing data that had been put in and saved at an earlier date. The function is many people can use it at once, looking at different data or the same data in a different way. Also, multiple users can add to it.
8. The three types of cardinality are one to zero or one, one to zero or many, and many to zero or many.
9. Your digital identity is the combination of all digital traces of your life, including social medias, purchase history, likes and dislikes, finances, etc. You can manage it by being private and secure, networking, keeping a good reputation by posting professionally, and more.
10. It is important to have a good digital identity because future employers will likely look before hiring you. In addition, this encompasses your personal brand.
11. The MIS community is a way to have social interactions, collaborate, and brand digitally. It integrates professional development, and coursework.
12. The purpose of building and eportfolio is to demonstrate experience with digital platforms for jobs. It can also help you manage your online presence and digital identity more closely.

Cassadi,
I liked how you mentioned that building an e-portfolio will show future employers that you have experience with digital platforms. I have never thought about that before, it would definitely be able to give you a competitive edge with future employers.
Mia Quagliariello says
Hi Cassidi! I totally agree that keeping a good digital identity is important in future employment activities, employers have access to so much information now! Digital identity collects so much of someone and it is important to keep an eye on how much info you let about yourself online as it could be used or seen by so many people, especially prospective employers. You brought up a good point that keeping interactions and therefore your digital identity more professional can help as your digital identity does relate much to a personal brand.

This is also a good place to share a current resume, for the purpose of attracting prospective employers.
Raj Rawal says
Hi Olivia,
Your answer to the question on dynamic dashboards really stood out because it focused on the multiple users aspect of having access to the data. The data is only good if users access it and make data driven decisions. At my job we have several dashboards in Tableau that are updated in real-time but not many employees know how to access it and rely on me to provide the data in an e-mail communication. Little do they know – I just have it set up similar to Max (from the labs) to auto send a report every time a certain threshold has been breached and at 2.5 hour intervals.
Oliver Forssell says
Hi Olivia,
Great explanation of digital identity, I liked how you described that it goes further than just media platforms. Your digital identity includes every source of data left by your digital footprint, many people don’t think about how much data they leave behind day to day.

Raj Rawal says
Hi Brian,
When answering the question about primary symbols, I was not certain if the colors were significant more than the shape of the symbol. Does it need to be a blue rectangle? yellow oval or grey diamond? It would be a good question for next class for the professor to clarify. I did Google a few Cheng’s diagrams and they were various colors which lead me to believe that the colors don’t have much significance.
Kevin Desouza says
Would the two types of ERD notation be Chen and Crows Foot? Chen shows a entity as a rectangle, attributes as ovals, and a relationship as a diamond. Where as crows foot notation describes the type of a relationship; 1:1, 1:m, m:m.
Raj Rawal says

Week 2 Questions
What is an ERD? 3.1 (Slide 4, 5)
– ERD stands for entity relationship diagram, which is a data model that displays how data flows and relates to each other.
What are the two notations for ERD’s? 3.1 (Slide 10)
– The two notations for an ERD is Chen notation and crow’s foot.
What are the primary symbols? 3.1 (Slide 6)
– Using Chen notation, an entity is shown using a rectangle, Attribute is represented with a circle and a diamond is used to display a relationship.
What are the different relationships in crow’s foot notation, and how do you express those relationships? 3.1 (Slide 11-15)
– In crow’s notation, relationships are either 1 to 1, 1 to many or many to many. These are expressed using different endings to differentiate if it is one (single line), or many lines to indicate many. A small circle at the end of a line indicates a null value, and that the related entity is not mandatory.
ERD tables – key things?
– Each ‘table’ has the entity written up top, and each attribute is listed underneath like a list, with the primary key at the top of that list. The lines connecting each table represent the relationships.
What is Salesforce?
– Salesforce is a cloud platform that provides software for customer relationship management. The platform is typically used for marketing and sales, and allows businesses to better track and visualize data on customers.
What are Dynamic Dashboards and what are their functions?

An ERD (Entity Relationship Diagram) is a visual representation of different data using connections that describe now these data related to each other.
The two notations for ERD’s are:
– Chen’s Database Notation
-Crow’s Foot Database Notation
The Primary symbols are:
-Blue Rectangle/ Entity= noun ex. shopper, item
-Yellow Circle/ Attribute= adjective/ characteristic ex. item price
– Gray Diamond/ Relationship= verb ex. buys
The different relationships in Crow’s Foot notation can be described as one-to-zero or one relationship, a one to zero or many relationship and a many to zero or many relationship. The one to one or zero can be expressed as having one option. The one to many or zero can be expressed as having some options. Finally the many to zero or many relationship can be expressed as there is an unlimited value of possibilities.
The key things in an ERD table would be the relationship the verb is written above the arrow that flows with the rectangles. Entity’s are always listed on top of each table. Finally attributes are listed under the entity.

An ERD is an “entity relationship diagram” used as a visual representation of different data using conventions to correlate data. With that said, there are two kinds of ER diagram notations, Chen and Crow’s foot. Chen’s database notation includes Entity which is represented by a blue rectangle, Attribute, which is represented by a yellow circle, and lastly the symbol that represents Relationships is a black diamond. Relationship lines in crow’s foot notation have two indicators to describe the cardinality and the modality of the relationship. Cardinality tells you the maximum number of times that an instance of an entity can be associated with instances of the other entity. Modality tells you the minimum number of times that the instance can be associated with instances of the other entity. A key within ERD tables is an attribute in ER diagrams whose values are distinct for each individual entity in an entity set. Salesforce is a company that makes cloud-based software designed to help businesses find more prospects, close more deals, and wow customers with amazing service. A dynamic dashboard is a type of interactive data dashboard that updates automatically in real-time. Cardinality refers to the uniqueness of data values contained in a particular column of a database table. There are three relationship types or cardinalities, one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many. Digital identity is the information relative to the data path between relationships and products. It is important to have a good digital identity because it promotes a better relationship between consumer needs and product, in this case your identity is the product. This electronic file should be maintained in a positive aspect as companies are now looking for their future employee’s social media to see what type of person they “really are”. Maintaining a good digital identity is key for giving people an idea of how you may act or represent that company you may work for. With that being said, you should only put things on the internet that show you in a positive aspect, as it is important because whatever is on the internet, is there forever. The MIS community is a website used by teachers and students which allows them to solve business problems as well as provide information to the students. The purpose of building an e-portfolio is to collect information on yourself in a professional way, and have it ready to access as evidence for what you have learned, what you are capable of, and display achievements you may have.

Stefanie,
Excellent explanation of the importance of an e-portfolio. Saying it is a collect was spot on.

-ERD stands for an Entity Relationship Diagram. ERDs are visual representations of data that shows how the data is related.
-The two notations for ERDs are the Chen’s Database Notation and Crow’s Foot Database Notation.
– The symbols are Entities (noun, in a rectangle), Attributes (adjective, in an oval), and Relationships (verb, in a diamond)
-There are 3 different relationships in crow’s foot notation. They are one to zero or one, one to zero or many, and many to zero or many relationships.
-ERD Tables show two entities, attributes they contain, and the relationship the entities have with one another.
– Salesforce is a customer relationship management software. It is used by companies to help manage customer data on a cloud based server.
– A dynamic dashboard is a type of data dashboard that updates in real time.
-The three types of cardinalities are one to one, one to many, and many to many.
– A digital identity is the collection of information from a person’s online activity. This can include relationships, purchase history, passwords, online shopping preferences, etc.

Hi Zachary,
You did a good job explaining what the MIS community platform is. The e-portfolio will be great to use to show off your personal and professional experience to future employers.

– According to the slides an ERD is, “a visual representation of different data using conventions that describe how these data are related to each other.” (MIS, Slides 4 & 5)
-The two nominations for ERDs are Chen’s database notation & crow’s foot database notation.
– The primary symbols are square for the entity, circle for attribute, & diamond for relationship.
Entity, Attribute, Relationship
-The different relationships in crows foot notation are a 1:1 – a one-to-one relationship, 1:m – a one-to-many relationship, & m:m – a many-to-many relationship.

Week 2 Questions:
1. We are using Salesforce to learn the mechanisms of this platform so we can then use it to determine customer behavior, response and reactions to different marketing strategies.
2. Specific to this course, we are using Salesforce to act as a Digital Product Manager in Max Labs. The benefits of creating a database include things like “trustworthy reporting, proactive service, simplified collaboration”, etc. Salesforce has made it easier to input and store customer information.
3. A circle is the starting and ending of an event. A rectangle represents the activity of a process. A diamond represents decision-making of a process. Arrows show the flow of the process. A cylinder represents stored data and information.
4. Process Mapping is a visual representation of the breakdown of a process. We use process mapping so we can be precise and accurate and look for solutions to a problem.
5. One mistake in this swim lane diagram is that “Place Order” should start with a circle since it is the beginning of the process. “Finish” should also end with a circle because it is the end of the process. “Deliver” should be a rectangle instead of a cylinder because it is an activity. Finally, “Finish” should be placed at the bottom of the diagram in the “Finance” section.
6. One benefit to swim lane diagrams is that it determines who does what and in what order it is being done. Another benefit is that it is a training tool for people to make sure the right steps of the process are being taken. Swim lanes can also be handed off to a computer, HR, etc. to be reviewed.
