I completed my internship over the summer, so I did not have to balance schoolwork and my internship. I chose to get a summer internship because I am very busy during the school year. I work as a resident assistant and office assistant. I am also the director of fundraising for BHSA and a member of AIS. To handle this busy schedule on top of classes, I use my Google Calendar and make prioritized to-do lists. Adding an internship would not be feasible, so working over the summer was the right call for me.
At first, It was hard to balance all my schoolwork and internship at the same time. Last semester, I had a more difficult time since the classes I took, required a lot more time to study and do assignments, plus I had all in-person classes. This semester, I have been able to manage my time better since I have taken more online classes. This has helped me not have to take time out of my day to commute to Temple and get work done at home. One thing that has helped me keep it all together is using Google Calendar to plan my days. I have all my classes on a calendar and can see when I have free time and use that free time to get some hours in or finish homework/study. I also include any homework assignments or exam dates on the Reminder app on my iPad so I can see what is due soon.
This semester being my final semester, I am having to balance a 20-hour internship per week with 18 credits of major classes, which is very challenging but doable. It was extremely overwhelming in the beginning but I have learned to prioritize my school and studies and then my work. I also keep a strict schedule, talk to my internship supervisor and lecturers, and try to take care of my physical as well as mental health. My ability to manage this demanding job has been helped by my use of technology, keeping a calender, grouping my tasks and sorting them by the order of importance, and flexibility. All things considered, an organized schedule, honest communication, and a balanced strategy have helped me to effectively balance my last semester of coursework and internship obligations.
I handled my internship by thinking ahead and creating a schedule that would work with most internships. Prior to the semester, I planned my schedule to include 2 days where I would be required to commute., The remaining three days were room for me to work/study at home or at school. That being said, I still can easily lose track of time and delay projects/school work if I do not stay disciplined. I personally create a daily and weekly agenda list so I can check off projects I must do during the week. I delegate my time carefully and if I genuinely cannot finish a project at my workplace, I make sure to stay in close communication with my team and thankfully they are understanding that I am student.
To keep it real, it’s been a bit of a struggle to juggle school and work at the same time. Between taking an 18 credit courseload and working at my internship three days a week, I’ve had to learn time management skills to stay above water. One thing that I’ve been doing that’s really helped has been using my Outlook calendar not just for meetings but also to ‘block out’ focus time for certain tasks. For example, if I schedule an hour each for three tasks rather than trying to get the same three tasks completed over a three hour period, I’m much more likely to get everything completed.
I am taking an 18 credit course load and working full time at Apple. It has been very difficult balancing both. Work has been a huge undertaking especially having to go into the office everyday. When I come home at 7:30 it feels like I have to log on again to do school. I honestly think waking up earlier in the mornings to finish off school tasks has helped a lot and staying a bit more organized by keeping a calendar around me has improved my time management skills. I think the expectation at Apple that work comes first is a bit tough to put school as the first and foremost important thing in my mind and I am still trying to find the right balance.
