My MIS courses have definitely aided my understanding of process automation in the workplace. There was an instance earlier in the year where I helped a coworker better understand how a process could be streamlined by building a swimlane diagram, and showed her how it worked and why someone would use one. I never would have learned about these concepts without my MIS courses. I shared this with many members of my department, and it seemed to have percolated upward, because last week our team got an email with a swim lane diagram from the deputy head of the department lauding how we had taken steps to look at things differently.

My coursework in statistics, data and analytics, and finance has been particularly valuable in my role as a business analyst intern at Amtrak. These courses have equipped me with the quantitative skills needed to analyze data and make data-driven decisions. Additionally, my knowledge in UX design and web app development has allowed me to understand and improve the user experience within Amtrak’s systems, such as their LMS. Courses in business ethics and business communications have helped me communicate effectively and make ethical decisions while collaborating with different teams and stakeholders at Amtrak. This diverse educational background has proven to be a valuable asset during my internship.

In my Data Analytics and Statistics courses. I learned valuable skills and knowledge in Excel to leverage in my internship. My Data Analytics course provided me a strong foundation in analyzing and interpreting data to understand the information given for my work projects. For example, I was tasked with creating a graph given a report of User Usage in Master Control. I had to followed the principles I learned in the course such as Tufte’s principles of data visualization. On the other hand, my experience using Excel in my statistics course allowed me to apply this software to many tasks during my internship.

All the Statistics courses I had to take allowed me to have a deeper understanding of Excel formulas and shortcuts. This skill learned in the classroom allowed me to have leverage in my internship. I use Excel a lot to create monthly reports and with the Excel skills I have learned, I am a lot more efficient with my time. The Statistics courses gave me a lot of exposure to working on Excel through the numerous Excel projects assigned. The Business Communications course has also taught me how to effectively communicate and collaborate with my colleagues through emails.

My MIS courses were definitely the most helpful when it came to skills used for my internship. I used a lot of JavaScript and React. I also believe that the MIS courses teach us a way of thinking that is very effective in the industry. For instance, I was always thinking about how processes can be streamlined or more productive. The technology world is always changing, so a lot of the job is learning about the newest technology and systems, but Temple has definitely given me the right skillset to be prepared for the corporate world.

I have leveraged many of my Supply Chain core courses like Procurement in my internship. My job is procurement at the heart and utilizing strategies around vendor negotiations, pricing analytics, and the RFQ process has proved to be useful. I have also used a lot of my MIS Data Analytics courses. All of our dashboards use Snowflake, SQL, Python, and Tableau. Knowing and building off of the fundamentals helps in further analysis of quotes received from suppliers and demand forecasting. I think most useful to this experience was the past internships I have had but classroom content has aided in my present job development.
