Question #1: Internship Discussion

August 25, 2025 7 Comments

I hope everyone is off to a good start at your internships.  Please feel free to respond to one another student here if you have questions or comments.

The first question is easy: Where will you be working/worked?  What will you be doing/did?

Please post a comment to this post and share with everyone what some of your responsibilities will be/were.  Others may have questions or may be doing the same types of things.

Please be sure that your user ID is your name and not your TU email alias and also that you have an avatar.  We want to know who is posting.

This summer, I worked at a Philly-based company called Mainfactor as an E-Commerce Operations intern.
Mainfactor’s general responsibility to our clients is to oversee their online merchandise stores. Most of our clients are musical artists who need a modern platform to sell their merchandise and to provide a space for their fans to engage with their content.
We use Shopify for Partners as our main platform, among other things like Print On Demand services for specialized products.
My responsibilities as an intern are fluid. My supervisor is a Store Manager for different artists and their online stores. Since May, he has been teaching me the responsibilities of his role, and how to do things myself. This is all with the intention of keeping me on as a part-time worker until I graduate, and eventually finding a full-time role within the company after graduation.
I operate in somewhat of an assistant capacity, where my supervisor will either assign tasks to me if it’s something I have done before, or take me through the process of a certain task so that I will be able to do it individually after some repitition.

Over the summer, I worked as an IT Project Manager intern at Main Line Health. MLH has several hospitals and healthcare facilities across the Philadelphia area, and I worked in their corporate office. I had the opportunity to gain exposure to many different aspects of project management. I attended numerous meetings that gave me insights into the variety of projects the IT Project Managers were leading, and I also contributed to smaller projects of my own. This allowed me to develop a broad perspective on what it’s like to work as a PM. Some of my projects were:
    – Consolidating a 130+ question technical screening questionnaire and collaborating with the IS, GRC, and AI teams to refine it
    – Pulling infrastructure data to support vendor consulting teams in preparing for their cloud migration journey
    – Leading a project to find a way to track blood bank coolers in the hospitals

This summer I worked as a Development and Testing Intern at FINDigital. It is a small company in DC. This was a great opportunity to get hands on learning in fullstack development. One of the biggest projects I worked on was a Claims Calculator. This project forced me to apply a lot of my previous learnings from my previous MIS classes.
My main responsibility with this project was to build it but also review the website for bugs and issues. I created a spreadsheet where we would track any bugs that my team came across. I also wireframed a few pages to redesign the website to look more pleasing and accessible. Ultimately, it was a great opportunity!

This past summer, I worked at Capital One as a Project Management Intern in the Cloud Operations Resilience Engineering (CORE) tech division under Associate Experience. CORE supports 1,300+ associates, including engineers, developers, and product managers, by fostering engagement, growth, and culture.

My main project was leading focus groups and user empathy sessions to uncover the “why” behind survey results and provide leadership with insights to improve the associate experience. I also contributed to large-scale event planning, including the CORE Annual Gathering with 900+ attendees, and supported my team in streamlining workflows.

This past summer, I worked at Automated Financial Systems (AFS) as a Cybersecurity Analyst. I worked mainly on the Identity Access Management (IAM) side of the department. AFS specializes in software for the global commercial lending/credit industry. I worked mainly on their AFSVision Software, a digital platform that allows banks to handle various loan types in real time. Some of the tasks I worked on included access requests, monthly access recertifications, service account password changes, and engaging in various internal projects for the Security team. I am still learning how to do certain tasks to the present day, as I will be working part-time during the semester.
