After learning about IP addresses I feel like it will help a lot as an IT auditor because each computer have their own unique IP address like a social security # . This help you as better IT auditor because it helps you understand the flow and how everything work. Knowing that IP addresses are unique you could kind of track things down, which could be a security issue that need to protected and audited.

We learnt about public IP addresses and private IP addresses, because I’ve always wondered why two people can have the same address when they are not in the same domain. Understanding that the router is the one that takes us to the outside world(internet), and that the switches and hubs communicate within a network helped us know what to look at when auditing the network of an organization. The tracert command showed the path from your network to the internet. This is a useful command we can use in the future as auditors because I think it can help one determine if the router is redirected elsewhere. Can also show if firewalls are in place and your IP address can’t just be used as entry into your system.

After last class I learn that IP is people’s personal network identity because IP addresses are unique. For IT auditors, I think IP is mean a method or channel to monitor, follow, and control the computers match with the unique IP addresses. We also know that router helps us connect to the internet. Switches and hubs help us know what should do and know on the organization’s computers when we audit.

IP Addresses means more to me after last class because it has given me a deeper understanding of IP addresses.
Sometimes, during audits (when we want to test that there is a segregated environment for testing and production), one of the criteria’s we look out for is that the IP addresses have to be different (Unique) for both environments.
And sometimes, when trying to understand the network infrastructure/network environments of an organization, what you basically get is a diagram with all sorts of hubs/routers/switches/firewall (etc) connections and different IP Addresses. So, you want to know how the internal network is separated from the external network, you want to see that the firewall is providing the right barrier and placed in the right section of the networking environments, sometimes just looking at IP Addresses helps to understand these diagrams better, and these devices can furthermore be pinged (with their IP Address), so knowing about IP addresses can help in these situations. Understanding how the vast number of network make up a corporate network will definitely help make a better auditor.

Exactly. The ip address is a key part of the devices identity on the network. Understanding how to interpret them is crucial to understanding network auditing!

In week 5 class, we learnt about IP address. IP address is unique for different network. It is similar to our ID number. We can connect different devices by their IP addresses. For an IT auditor, I should understand the network and the network environment, because many hackers install malware by access others’ network. It is important for IT auditors to understand network to evaluate the risks of attacking To understand the network, the first step is to understand IP address.

I have heard about the usages of IP address before, like locating a person according to the IP address, which called fresh searching in Chinese. However, it is the first time for me to have a look at the hobs and routers through my computer by cmd. That is really excited for me. As an IT auditor, it is important to know how to use this tool to find potential risks and to see if there is any vulnerability that may threaten the system. I know the word IP address before but didn’t know about it. Now I know it not only is a numerical label, it is also assigned to each computer to connect to a network. An IP address serves two principal functions which are host or network ID and location addressing. I especially like the “extra command line” professor Wasson taught in class. For example, “ipconfig/all” could see all the connections, and the IP address and all the details.
“Ping xxxx” could show xxxx’ IP to check if it exist. In addition, it is great to know different type of Topology (how nodes connection design), LANs. and WAN.

IP address is a unique identifier given to every machine in a network. And IP address serves two primary functions. First, It is used as an interface identification for a network of machines. Second it also serves to provide a location of that machine, much like a physical address for a home or business.
Some websites will often share one IP address. That is dangerous to share your IP address with hundreds of other websites.

I thought the presentation of IP addresses was good, and I liked the analogy about car license plate, license to drive etc. I have for a while thought of IP address as the address on an envelope (packet). You mentioned the same analogy in class and I have heard it elsewhere. Understand local networks versus the internet and how NAT translation can be difficult. IP addresses can reveal a lot about your location and organization (because ISPs and organizations own different blocks of IPs).
Having good data on your organizations IP’s is essential for IT auditing and security. It allows for networking, subnets, administration and all sorts of functionality. Knowing which systems are on what IP allows us to visualize/imagine what is where. As a security track student, knowing what is NOT supposed to be there is also important.
I did some additional reading on IPV4 and IPV6… its amazing we are almost out of IPV4 addresses, however the switch to IPv6 will allow every particle on the earth to have an IP — AND 100 more!

The part that most resonated with me was our discussion on ports. I didn’t truly understand how they worked and now when I hear about some security disaster and how data was “transmitted in the clear” I can better understand stuff. Now I know that it could mean that the traffic was sent using tcp/40 (HTTP) when it should have been sent via tcp/443 (HTTPS), which is encrypted.

I know IP Address is the computer’s identity on the internet before. After class, I realize IP Addresses can do a variety of job. For example, when we build our own network at home, both my router and I need a IP Address to recognize different devices. For some illegal network activities, law enforcement agencies can quickly track the IP address to determine the location of the suspect.
For network components, I am quite familiar with them becuase I build my own wireless network through connecting different network devices, including cable modem, router, and WIFI range extender. As a IT auditor, I believe the knowledge of network components can help us identify vulnerabilities and threats within an organization rapidly.

Week 5 was definitely entertaining as we learned about IP addresses. There are private IP addresses and public IP addresses. Also, there are dynamic IP addresses and static IP addresses. Before this particular class, IP addresses to me were just a random string of numbers that the Verizon representative wanted on the other end of the phone when I called to complain. Now, I know what the numbers in each octet represent.
IP addresses are unique; it is like your car’s license plate number. An IP address provides a sense of identity for your device when it connects to the Internet (with the help of a router).The IP address also creates an electronic trail to your final destination on the Internet.
As an IT auditor, IP addresses are important because it will help us locate open ports (vulnerability) for that specific IP address. Not to mention, IP addresses reveal all the details of where an individual has been.

I better understand the purpose of an IP address now. It is, a unique number assigned to each computer to that’s connected to a network. It has two key purposes – network identification and location addressing.
When performing audits we need to be able to trace communications back to the source and that can be done via the IP address. In an IT environment, we may we need to ensure there a separate environments for testing and production), we now know there needs to be two unique IP addresses.

It also allows a device to communicate with other devices through the Internet.
