Dean Ash Rao’s laptop contains highly sensitive data, including faculty records, student information, financial budgets, and strategic partnership documents, along with administrative credentials for university systems. These contents are critically important as any data breach could severely damage the institution’s reputation and trigger legal consequences due to regulatory violations (e.g., FERPA/GDPR compliance issues), potentially resulting in substantial fines or lawsuits. The laptop essentially serves as both an operational hub and a significant vulnerability point for the business school.

    Sorry, i’m wrong.
In his computer, it was committee notes, faculty salary information, stuff like that. It may have been confidential, but not really proprietary.
In addition, it contained some of the dean’s personal information as well.
The Dean had commented that the theft of his laptop was ‘a valuable lesson’ about the
    importance of backups.

Actually, the laptop is even more important to the dean himself. After data screening, it was found that there is no student PII in the computer, but some SSNs of the dean’s family and their Indian bank account information. At the same time, through data recovery and backup query, it was finally confirmed that the lost files were part of the documents created in the past two months, such as the latest draft of the Rochester Business Journal column, budget reports, etc., which all need the dean to re-edit and complete by himself.

However, as the Dean of the Saunders College of Business, one might assume that Ash Rao’s laptop contains a great deal of sensitive information about students, faculty, etc., as well as confidential documents—both published and unpublished—related to the school and college. In that case, the loss of the computer could have led to significant data breaches in multiple aspects. Fortunately, such sensitive information was not stored on this laptop or deleted in advance..

As the Dean of the college, the information in his laptop is very important.

His computer may store information such as college’s strategic plan, new courses, communication emails with colleagues, committee notes and faculty salary information, which are crucial to the operation of the college.

Secondly, there are his monthly Rochester Business Journal columns. The Dean wants the Saunders College to play a role in revitalizing Rochester and the surrounding region, so the articles are important to him.

Then, there were the PowerPoint files for presentation in the computer. Losing these files would take him a lot of time to make up.

Finally, the computer contains the bank card information of his family members. The leakage of this information may cause economic losses to him and his family. There might also be information about his software company. The leakage might cause losses to his company.

The dean of Saunders Business School relies heavily on their laptop for daily work. It’s like the central hub for managing admin tasks, handling teaching duties, and pushing forward the school’s plans. If that laptop gets lost, the dean would have to reorganize files and recover data, which would tank work efficiency. Worse, there’s a risk that unauthorized people could get their hands on the school’s confidential data and the dean’s personal info.
This laptop probably stores a ton of sensitive stuff: meeting minutes from committees that oversee the school’s operations, details about staff salaries, and budget reports. As a leader and fundraiser, the dean might also have strategic planning docs, alumni contact info, fundraising materials, and presentations for business leaders and donors. On top of that, there could be the dean’s and their family’s Social Security numbers, the dean’s personal bank account details in India, and other financial info. It’s like a goldmine of important data, and losing it would be a huge deal for both the school and the dean personally.
