New Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Cybersecurity Reporting Rules for Public Companies
I participated as an audience member for an IT related live webinar on cybersecurity. It was a presentation via zoom. It was hosted by Thu Nguyen who works at Wells Fargo in their Audit Leadership department as well as serves as an advisor for the ITACS program. She is also a board member of the ISACA organization. Over the course of the webinar, she discussed cyber breaches common in 2023. She said that phishing emails were an extremely common form of cyber breach. She discussed breach reporting and the importance of disclosing any cybersecurity incidents. She gave a breakdown of all of the states that had comprehensive data privacy laws and I was shocked to learn that there were only 13. Finally, she discussed rankings and said that Temple’s ITACS and MIS programs both ranked extremely highly. Overall, I learned a great deal about the world of auditing and cybersecurity. I asked Thu a question at the end of the webinar regarding the overlap between cybersecurity and IT auditing. She helped clear up my confusion and gave me better insight into the key differences.
This activity relates to my coursework as I will be taking a cybersecurity class next semester and this helped me to prepare for that.
