Field Data Collection and Mobile GIS: Digital Tools for Research in the Field

The workshop focused on modern mobile data collection using smartphones and tablets. During the session, participants were introduced to tools such as KoBoToolbox for designing and deploying digital surveys and QField, a mobile GIS application that connects with QGIS for field data collection. The activity explained how researchers can create surveys, collect data offline, use GPS for location tracking, capture photos and other multimedia, and synchronize the information with desktop systems for analysis.

From this workshop, I learned how mobile technology can make field data collection faster, more accurate, and more organized. I also learned the importance of good survey design, how GPS and mapping tools can improve data quality, and how offline data collection is useful when working in areas with limited internet access.

This activity relates to my coursework because many classes require research, data collection, and analysis. Learning how to use tools like KoBoToolbox and QField can make collecting and organizing data much more efficient for projects or fieldwork. It also connects to potential career goals in research, community work, or any field that relies on collecting and analyzing real-world data, since these tools are commonly used by researchers and organizations working in the field.
