Media Tech Intern

  1. I worked as a Media Tech Intern on the Strategic Program Management team at NBCUniversal. I was the only intern on this team and was trusted with projects regarding a mass system migration and projects focused on VOD (Video-On-Demand) and OTT (Over-The-Top) streaming.
  2. Two large areas that I focused on was the system migration and the Peacock streaming service. NBCUniversal was using a system originally called MCP that held thousands of pieces of metadata on brands/networks and their series. MCP was owned by Google, but Google decided to dissolve it entirely by the beginning of August. What this meant for my team was that we had to translate all that metadata into other systems and flag any mistakes so these series and episodes are properly documented. In completing this migration, we maintained in good legal standing with our network clients and all of the data was properly integrated into our other systems. The other key area of my internship that I focused on was the Peacock application. Peacock is fairly new to the streaming game and there was so much that I had the privilege of working on. I took the lead on storage cleanup meetings, saving the company space to add new titles to their cloud, and played an active role in several internal projects. These internal projects focused on the optimization and growth of Peacock as a whole and various technology fields we would need to engage more viewers. I also completed series metrics for WWE content which was a huge ingest into Peacock that lasted the entire summer. Tracking these metrics helped management understand our progress with this content as it was one of the largest series to ingest.
  3. Going into this internship, I wanted to see the side of technology that I never got to see in a classroom. In school we learn about cloud architecture and web development, but I have always been fascinated with how technology is ever-changing in the world of entertainment. The way that consumers watch television has altered our business models so much, so it is exciting to see what companies do to keep up. I learned about huge systems like Compass (a program scheduling tool,) TLVOD (Translator Video-On-Demand,) and GTM (General Title Management). These systems host tons of data to ensure that we deliver requested content to consumers from the screen of their choice. I was also able to get a firsthand look at what it takes to develop new systems in the interest of expansion. One of the courses that really helped me with this internship was Lead Global Digital Projects because it teaches you about business processes, JIRA, and how to work together as a team. Familiarity with this topic allowed me to work with my team and offer assistance for more projects when others had hard deadlines. Some Tableau knowledge that I had learned earlier was also very helpful in ingesting mass data for storage cleanups and series metrics tracking. Overall, this experience gave me insight on an MIS field that I see as my future, and the future of entertainment.
