The Internet of Things

What is the “internet of things”? This phrase refers to the connections between all electronic devices. No matter the device, whether it be your toaster, your car, your cell phone, or your glasses, it will communicate through the internet, store data about you, and share it with the rest of the devices you interact with on a daily basis. The main goal of the “internet of things” is to create a cohesive, data driven, efficient experience for people in their everyday lives (Morgan, 2014). The importance of the “internet of things” is different for individuals and businesses. In terms of the individual, they will gain a more efficient experience with their daily interactions. This efficiency is able to happen due to the large amounts of data that is collected on the individual. The “internet of things” gives the ability to devices to be aware of patterns, and preferences of the user to better predict what the user wants. Businesses see importance in the data itself. With all devices collecting information, businesses can tailor their products/services to maximize customer satisfaction and sales. Secondly, businesses will be able to use the data to create better forecasts and make more accurate decisions. The large sums of data is driving the adoption of “internet of things” devices.  In MIS 2502,  we learned how data can be can be analyzed to allow for more accurate decisions and predictions. The data collected can be used for advanced analytics techniques and software, like R, that was also taught in MIS 2502. In the real world, the company Loxone is creating “internet of things” homes. Loxone is building new homes that feature devices that all are connected and communicate with each other. The goal of the company is to create an autopilot home so the residents do not have to worry about mundane tasks in the home such as heating/cooling, security, and energy usage. The devices collect data about the residents’ preferences and habits and attempt to predict and adjust the actions in the home to create the optimal home experience.
