Business Intelligence

Dyson

Summer 2023

Job Description:
During my internship in business intelligence at Dyson, I worked closely with the analytics team to automate and improve solutions specifically for the Dyson Americas division. During my stay, I was heavily involved in every step of the delivery process for BI solutions, from interacting with internal stakeholders to understand their BI needs to designing and implementing these solutions strategically.

Information About the Organization:
Powerhouse in the world of technology, Dyson is well-known for its rapid expansion and aspiration, which extends to several product categories, different regions, and its expanding staff. Since starting its operations in the US in 2002, Dyson has experienced rapid expansion. The bustling Fulton Market district of Chicago is home to the company’s US epicenter. I worked in this location in the Analytics department, which is a vital section that plays a key role in areas like sales, service, and managing the operations of Dyson Demo Stores around the country.

Job Function:
I supported company operations by acting as a liaison between the data world and my function. Becoming the subject matter expert on the platforms we chose, guiding the deployment of BI solutions to satisfy informational requirements, and translating complex business problems into understandable analyses and reporting criteria were my main duties. I also oversaw technical and functional documentation maintenance, conducted comprehensive project testing with business partners, and led energetic training sessions.

Examples of Projects:
During my internship, I worked on a big project that entailed standardizing our reporting system throughout the Americas Region. The project’s goal was to develop a comprehensive self-service tradestock reporting dashboard that would provide improved visibility into important parameters including units per door, WoC, and total stock, among others. This dashboard combined data from multiple areas, using Tableau systems from the US, Power BI reporting from MX, and manual methods from CA. By the end of the project, we had gone from mostly manual, top-level reporting to a complex, real-time automated system.

What I Learned and its Relevance to My Major:
The practical experience I obtained at Dyson greatly enhanced my comprehension of Management Information Systems (MIS). The curriculum for MIS majors frequently highlights the relationship between technology, business strategy, and decision-making. I was able to see this integration in action at Dyson. Between classroom theory and real-world applications, the practical exposure to data visualization tools like Tableau and data manipulation using Python and SQL filled the gaps. I was able to understand the subtleties of system architecture, project management, and user experience considerations—all essential components of management information system (MIS)—through my involvement in optimizing reporting procedures and creating the tradestock dashboard. The principles I studied in my coursework—from database administration to IT strategy—were vividly brought to life through this internship, reinforcing my love for the field and its critical position in the modern, technologically advanced company environment.
