Green Cloud Computing and Cloud Security

Green Cloud Computing and Cloud Security

Green Cloud Computing

Brief Overview

Green cloud computing is the environmental benefits delivered over the internet by IT services. There are two perspectives: green hardware, and green software engineering methodologies. Green hardware is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly servers, network appliances, and storage devices used in data centers. Green software engineering methodologies include all applications that manage data centers and other cloud-based services. The main idea behind green software methodologies is to have reliability and energy efficiency while meeting organizational requirements.

Green cloud computing is important to decrease the amount of hardware and be more efficient. Hardware such as servers, appliances, and storage devices can be wasteful and cost a lot of money because of the amount of materials. Green cloud computing makes server utilization rates more efficient and makes workload more flexible which in turn makes infrastructures more energy-efficient.

Relation to MIS 3406

Green cloud computing builds on the concept of serverless computing, virtualization, and the well-architected framework. Green cloud computing is the use of serverless computing to be more environmentally friendly. It relates to virtualization because emulating hardware using software decreases the use of physical equipment. It also builds on four of the six pillars of the well-architected framework: operational excellence, performance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.

Example of Green Cloud Computing

Some examples of Green Cloud Computing are Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive. All three of these offer cloud storage services. Being able to save documents on any of these is environmentally friendly as it helps in the transition to being a paperless organization.

Cloud Security

Brief Overview

Cloud security is the practice of protecting cloud-based data, applications, and infrastructure against cyber attacks. It is a subset of cybersecurity. The difference from cybersecurity is that admins have to ensure security through third-party services.

It is important because it helps keep sensitive information safe within the cloud. It helps prevent data breaches and loss. It also helps keep organizations safe from noncompliance lawsuits.

Relation to MIS 3406

Cloud security builds on the well-architected framework pillar of security. Organizations and individuals need to make sure to secure data so that it can’t be accessed by unauthorized people. Some things we use in MIS 3406 to ensure security were security groups, Access Controls Lists, and IAM roles. All of these prevent unauthorized people from accessing data you don’t want them to get to. We also placed databases in a private subnet within a VPC to avoid access from unauthorized people to the databases.

Example of Cloud Security

An example of Cloud Security is the encryption of data. Encrypting data keeps outsiders from accessing it. Sensitive information should never get into the wrong hands and encrypting data is a great way to ensure that.

Relation between Green Cloud Computing and Cloud Security

The relation between Green Cloud Computing and Cloud Security is that you need Cloud Security to ensure that your cloud service is environmentally friendly. If you don’t secure your cloud-based data, it can lead to high amounts of traffic back and forth between the data.  Preventing access to certain data can decrease this traffic. If the traffic isn’t controlled, it can lead to people over-using servers, Also, it affects reliability which is a part of the main idea of green software engineering,
