Experience at BusinessOne Technologies

Working at Business One Technologies, Inc. was one of the most privileged experiences that I have had in my degree program. It was a really great experience for me to work with an excellent team of business one technologies coworkers. BusinessOne Technology, Inc. is a consulting and turnkey applications provider which provides tools to help pharmaceutical and biotech companies to assess their markets. As an intern, I got a chance to work with the company’s new analytics and reporting department and was tasked with building a MS Access proof-of-concept application to automatically create PowerPoint reports for their clients. The PowerPoint report was expected to take an input of State name from user and auto fill the state related data from MS Access database into the predefined reporting template. I was responsible for building the interface in MS Access that will drive the production of PowerPoint application and was involved in the following activities:

  • Data Collection and Data Modelling –
    • Data modelling of data for approximately 50 states to be used for various reporting matrix by the client. examples: – association, pharmacy market analysis, medicare market analysis, managed Medicaid and etc…..
    • Information in various tables – state name, no. of retail pharmacies, average of sale, insurance or without insurance people, insurance plan name, age, disabilities, adults, children, and so on
  • Writing code –
    • Using Visual Basic Application (VBA) scripting language for writing code for auto population of data in slides of PowerPoint presentation template
    • Write code to create design and layout of each predefined slide
  • Writing queries –
    • Writing queries in MS Access to fetch information from tables as defined by the client reporting matrix
    • Examples:
      • Based on the state selected by client, auto-populate the names of Governor and state legislature
      • Based on the state selected by client, auto-populate insurance data for that  state

This application was going to be used by the analytics department and would save reporting time and also allow for dynamic updates in existing client reporting templates. During this internship, I got a chance to learn VBA and also apply my coursework learnings on solving real world problems.
