Delta Airlines – Japan: September 2014- April 2015

Data Analytic Intern – Finance Department

While studying abroad in Japan, I had the privilege of to work with David Spence, the Regional Director of Finance. At Delta Airlines one of my primary responsibilities was to create Purchase Orders in order for the company to create budgets to set controls for various expenses.  In order to do so, I communicated and collaborated with 43-person team throughout US and Asia to create an annual budget for 36 Vendors. Then I would I analyze the data entries submitted by these members to generate purchase orders for six airports in Japan, as well as branches in Garuda, Mexico, and Vietnam. These reports were used as a financial control to make budget decisions valuing up to $1 billion. In addition, I also initiated a Purchase Order Status Report to set milestones for Finance department and notify supervisor of ongoing stat. The traditional way was to use Excel to sort the entries by general ledgers, cost centers, and tax code, then create a report totaling each unique combination. The original process took hours or days to complete depending on the size of the file. However, using my understanding of Delta’s financial process, I built an Excel Macro to automate and produce over 300 purchase orders for entry into InvoiceWorks. Now, each Purchase Order takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Finally, before returning to the US, I trained fellow coworkers on how to create purchase orders and how to use Excel Macros.
