Deloitte Class Trip

While studying abroad in the Summer of 2018 I had the opportunity to visit the Deloitte offices in Rome for one of my classes. My classmates and I got to meet with Andrea Cannavò, a partner at Deloitte who spoke with us about the ins and outs of how they use accounting within their firm. Cannavò also spoke about the importance of communication within the firm and to clients and shareholders with the use of technology.

He explained that Deloitte, while being a large company with offices all around the world, has to monitor internal metrics in the same way across the board. This requires an infrastructure that allows employees to look at the same information at the same time to analyze performance and create reports. Once these reports are created, they get sent to senior management and shareholders for review. The delivery of these reports is done through an app which makes monitoring the company convenient.

I have learned in many classes that MIS is “the glue of an organization”, I am now seeing this applied in real life. Deloitte, and other large accounting and finance firms are hiring more and more people with experience in MIS. They believe that continually innovating their technologies will increase their longevity. For example, Deloitte provides technology consulting services, this is very different from typical accounting firm services but they have moved into this space because it was strategic.

Overall I learned a lot from my visit to Deloitte. It has given me a real-world look into how companies are moving from a siloed view to an enterprise view.
