Sales & Data Analyst

  1. Job function (e.g., overall role, assigned tasks)

I was hired as a sales representative that mainly involves meeting with various clients to listen to how we can solve their problems. These often involves reducing their capital expenditure by setting up a cloud instead of an onsite server. Moreover, I am also tasked with providing the proper infrastructure for each specific clients to make sure the services we provide is up to the customers expectation. I am also expected to do a lot of research and observations to be able to determine the proper specifics. I mainly work in the cloud computing services called Nimbus . Cloud computing is the company\’s main bread and butter. However, I am also tasked with doing minor data analyst work using Anaplan and Tableau as another part of the companies offered services. Besides that, I work mainly on comparing prices and specifications with competitors like AWS and Azure to provide clients the cheapest and most affordable solution.

  1. Examples of projects (e.g., list the projects you worked on and what you accomplished)

I have worked on various projects with large agencies that wish to move their operations to the cloud. As cloud computing is only starting to build up steam in Malaysia, I have a hard time conveying the benefits of moving operations to the cloud. One of the projects I was tasked with was with a government agency called Pencetakan Nasional Malaysia (PNM). They are the national printing agency for the country. Basically, all printing rights, licenses, government related paperwork would all have to go through PNM\’s approval. For example, the standard history textbook for all high school students would be require PNM\’s approval before it can be printed by other independent printing companies. Being a government agency PNM has a large amount of data that was originally kept in a data server onsite. But as they are moving towards providing contract to their printing to other companies instead of printing it out themselves to cut down on cost. PNM is also looking to lower their cost from their IT department. By having an onsite 24/7 IT team running around the clock, a cooling system, fire safety measures, high powered network, electricity and equipment. Their cost of keeping their server running is through the roof. I went out of the office to meet with their representative and made a power point slide to show the benefits of choosing our cloud computing services as well as how we fair with competitors, they were fairly convinced. I was then tasked with looking at how large of a storage they need, how much memory will they require, how much processing power will they require as well as a disaster recovery system. I then provided these information as well as a quote.

  1. What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this experience in the context of specific courses)

What I have learned greatly involves material from MIS 3406 Enterprise IT Architecture. The class has taught me the basics of cloud computing as well as how to build one ourselves on AWS. However, this internship taught me all work that goes behind building a cloud and a working infrastructure. This is because the company uses their own software and infrastructure to cloud computing, rather than just using AWS or Azure like most of the other companies. I have learned a lot on how the cloud actually works from scratch and the little details that are often not talked about in MIS 3406. I have also learned to provide IT solutions to business related problems like reducing client\’s operational and capital expenditure by using the latest most reliable solution like cloud computing. I have also learnt to use Anaplan to sort and query data as well as tableau.
