The Pennsylvania Ballet is a nonprofit organization located in Philadelphia PA on the 22nd floor of the Land Title Building. The Finance department I work in is made up of 3 full time employees, 2 part time employees (which I am one of), and two contracted outside employees. My jobs are to input invoices and checks into company software, maintain databases of members of the school, update current databases with new students in the school, streamlining processes of data entry and database maintenance and any other projects or tasks assigned to me. One project I really enjoyed was a project where I was tasked to compare the tuition of the Pennsylvania Ballet’s school to other schools around the Philadelphia area. I created an excel spreadsheet and input all the different tuitions. With this came some problems because not every school charges tuition in the same way. So I had to extract transform and load all the different tuition data into a master spreadsheet which I used to create comparisons. I was able to present this to the Finance department to report my findings. Through this project and other tasks I’ve completed in my time at the ballet, I’ve learned about how difficult it can be to deal with legacy systems. Trying to create fully coherent databases and maintaining them can be increasingly difficult if there is not one company wide format for data entry. This along with learning how company specific software can lead to inefficiencies in day to day operations.
