Nike once again changing the sport of skateboarding. Is it for better or for worse? Only time will tell…
NIKE APP GAMIFIES SKATEBOARDING, OFFERS REAL-TIME COACHING FROM PROS

Nike has just launched an iOS7 app that lets skateboarders compete with fellow riders across the globe, gamify their tricks, and interact with pro riders — all while learning new moves.
The Nike SB Skate app offers real-time tips on mastering tre-flips and backflips from riders such as Sean Malto, Paul Rodriguez, and Alex Olson. Plus the app features tilt-to-play video, YouTube uploading and streaming, and gamification features where users can earn badges for learning new tricks or competing against friends.
The free app also features what is called the Trick Tree, “a virtual index cataloging the taxonomy of skate tricks,” Nike says. The Trick Tree allows you track, flaunt, and catalogue every trick in your arsenal, and see how your friends compare.
Other recent inventions for skateboarders include Trace, a lightweight sensor that attaches to just about any type of board, from surfboard to skateboard, to track your movements and feed that data directly to your smartphone for analyzing and sharing. Using inertial sensors and GPS technology, Trace — which just completed a successful campaign on Kickstarter — can identify skating tricks in detail, and reports back how to correct any flaws.
