Medical Scribe

  1. A medical scribe’s role is to accompany a physician throughout their shift, assisting them in charting details about a patient’s complaint, symptoms, and plan for disposition. This role allows physicians to see more patients and reduce the time spent on documentation. Scribes go through extensive pre-clinical and clinical training and are educated on medical terminology and charting specifics. This is a paid shadowing internship
  2. Accomplished 300 hours of work in the Emergency Department
  3. In addition to learning medical terminology and getting acclimated to the healthcare environment, I learned the importance of charting specifics used by insurance companies to determine whether certain procedures and orders are eligible to be covered. Scribes are immersed in their respective hospital’s charting platform, which was called PulseCheck. Charting software such as this organizes any given patient’s medical, familial, and social history. Needless to say, information systems play a critical role in the development of this software. As I learned charting specifics and navigating PulseCheck, I also was able to use my knowledge from my MIS courses to visualize the web workflows of the software…including is numerous downsides. Pairing MIS and medical knowledge, I believe that I can be a strong candidate for a position in IT within the healthcare industry.
