Read Between the Lines: Decoding Charts and Bars in the News

Hosted by Temple University, this webinar presented resources that deepen one’s understanding of data and its ability to lack objectivity. Although numerical data is usually interpreted as fact, displaying that data in a unique manner plays a large role on how it is interpreted by individual audiences. Knowing the purpose and motive of the creator of a visual data source helps the audience identify biases in data. It is known that graphs and charts can be exaggerated to sell a story more effectively. Knowing how to identify skewed data, understand numbers and display information in an easily interpretable way will help myself be transparent about information and should be of great use as I travel my career path.
