NFCR Summer Internship

For the summer of 2014 I interned as a Digital Marketing Intern for the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) located in Bethesda, MD. The National Foundation for Cancer Research was co-founded in 1973 by Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Albert Szent-Györgyi and lawyer and entrepreneur Franklin Salisbury, Sr. Over the past three decades, NFCR has grown into a world-renowned organization driven by our mission to fund leading-edge cancer research through prevention, detection, and treatment. NFCR supports nearly 50 laboratories and numerous scientists that have helped make possible many cancer treatments that are saving lives today. Chances are, you know someone who has benefited from advances made possible by their scientists.

The opportunity for me to be involved with their organization was awesome because I was able to tie in my major with what I am passionate about: cancer advocacy. During my time here I will be dealt with a lot of their website on the HTML side. Additionally collected, analyzed, and reported data from the various social media posts, e-appeals, and webpages. Through this exposure I was able to spearhead several new digital initiatives that broadened their brand awareness.

I met a personal goal of mine this summer in creating and sustaining relationships with the upper level management so that I can position myself to either head or assist with projects related to their mission.  I feel that I was able to facilitate these advances through the knowledge that I have acquired in MIS 3535. Overall my experience was one that allowed there to be a lot of growth both personally and professionally. Going in to the internship my skills– although great– were still in their infancy. Leaving this internship, I acquired the necessary skills to lead meetings, negotiate with upper management, and flourish in creative spaces. I was given multiple opportunities to succeed and took these opportunities and ran with them. I truly am grateful for the time that I had at NFCR and will use what I learned to wherever my professional career leads me.
