Business Technology Intern

In summer 2023, as a rising Junior, I interned at Power Home Remodeling Group as a Business Technology Intern. The position was hybrid and located at the company’s headquarters in Chester, PA. The internship was a 12-week rotational program, and I had the opportunity to work with every team in the company’s Business Technology department. Power Home Remodeling Group is very dedicated to technology and innovation using creativity. I was able to work and learn in a supportive environment throughout my summer.

While shadowing their Systems Support and Technology Support teams, I was able to learn about their own in-house system called Nitro. Nitro is used by every employee from the accounting department to the remodeling consultants. I sat in on meetings with third-party vendors to secure advertising leads and wiped old equipment to be recycled.

I spent about a month with the Network and Site Reliability Engineers. During my time with these teams, not only did I learn so many technical skills, but I also became a part of an amazing and close-knit team. I worked in Cisco Labs to replicate the HQ network and set up IP addresses with subnetting. I configured new routers and switches using a Mac’s terminal and re-cabeled a datacenter in HQ. One week, I was able to travel to PHRG’s 2nd data center location to add a new router and perform routine maintenance and upkeep. Working with the SRE team, I learned the basics of Meraki, Netbox, Lunix, and Docker.

My most memorable time during my internship was the weeks I spent with the Data Analytics team. I was assigned a project to analyze issue, close, and sold appointments for the Vice President of the contact center. Over 2 weeks, I made an interactive Tableau dashboard containing parameters, measures, and calculations. I explored relationships between day of week, time of day, and other factors. I was very proud of this project because I worked on it individually with my mentor’s guidance and the final project was sent to Executives to use while making business decisions.

My last two weeks, I shadowed the UX design team as well as a Producteer. I became familiar with CSS and C++ while building model sites in Code Sandbox. I saw the Agile process in action while following certain sprints and stories being completed by developers. During my time at Power Home Remodeling Group, I made many connections that will last well into the future. I learned technical skills that I could not have learned in any classes. This internship was a great learning experience and grew my passion for business technology and innovation.
