It Takes a Village Homecare – Tech Service Help

  1. Include the goals, results, who was helped, and what you learned in a brief
    paragraph.

    1. My mommom (grandma) is currently in the works of starting up her own homecare business called It Takes a Village. Since she has previous experience working in healthcare, she has the knowledge needed to run this kind of business but tends to struggle with the technical aspect. Over the past few months, my goal has been to help and teach her the tech skills needed to run this business without my assistance. I have done many different tasks to help start this business, but I will highlight three in this entry. One of the first things I did was research and buy her a laptop that would suit her needs. After being purchased, I installed the Office suite software and taught her the basics of Word since she is more familiar with Google Docs. I then created her logo in Canva, since I had some previous design experience in UX and other classes where I had to design a website. Lastly, she needed 20+ pages worth of legal documents to be filled out and sent to where they needed to go. The issue with this is that the documents she had were all separate PDF files and were filled with random previous information. My job was to recreate all of the documents in Word and replace the old information with her own. I am still helping her with this endeavor and most likely will be for a while, but so far I believe I have learned valuable teaching skills. My mommom is in her 60’s so it can be quite difficult to teach someone about tech when they aren’t as tech-savvy. Due to this, I have learned how important it is to be patient when teaching a new topic and how to control my frustration when the “student” doesn’t grasp the concept quickly. However, I am always willing to help my mommom out when needed so I guess it isn’t all that important for her to catch on quickly!
