Career Path and Goals

In the near future, I plan to pursue a career in reinsurance and/or commercial underwriting for a global (re)insurance carrier. Below, you will find the path that led me to these aspirations and career goals.

I came to Temple University in Fall of 2011 with plans to major in International Business Administration at Temple’s Fox School of Business. From a young age I have always been drawn to diversity and all things international, always jumping out of my seat to volunteer as the buddy for the new foreign student and immediately getting involved with a leadership position for the exchange program at my high school. I have always loved foreign languages, and studied 5 years of French as well as 3 years of Japanese during high school. I also spent the summer of my junior year of high school studying abroad in the countryside of Japan, an experience that I believe truly defined me as a person.

In my studies at Temple, I quickly began to feel that International Business was too broad of a major to stand on its own. During my freshman year, I completed two very different internships to familiarize myself with the different areas of the business world (you can check out some of my work experience on my resume by clicking here). As I am always thirsty to learn more, I decided I would wait until I was through with completing all of Temple’s core business classes so I could get a feel for the different areas of business and see what stuck out to me and felt right.

In August 2012, I left to study abroad in Japan at Temple University’s Japan Campus for my sophomore academic year. While I was there, I lived with another host family who spoke no English, taught business-English to Japanese business professionals in the rigid Japanese corporate world, and I studied at Temple University Japan (TUJ), a 2 hour commute from my home.

At TUJ, I was enrolled in two of the last core business classes I had left to complete. In my International Marketing course, a course which functioned as a semester long group project, we had to act as a company and develop a full business plan for a product in a new country. In this group project, I took on the role of the project leader, as well as the “Risk Manager.” It was then that I realized how perfectly Risk Managment and International Business can be combined. It was clear to me how fluidly they went hand-in-hand, and it clicked that this was a field I could definitely see myself getting involved in in the future.

I declared my second major of Risk Management & Insurance before returning to the US, and before even enrolling in the the Introduction to Risk Management course at Temple. By the time I began the intro course, I was passionate and determined to learn a lot and to do the best I possibly could. Ever since, I have been a sponge for all things risk management and insurance, attending professional society meetings and speaker series, studying outside of school and taking professional designation exams, and obtaining an internship at an insurance broker here in Philadelphia.

In the future, I hope to pursue a career in reinsurance and/or commercial underwriting for a global insurance carrier.
