Dr. Tessa Cole: The cybercrime link from those behind the door (incarcerated) to those in the free world

Numerous instances of cybercrimes have been occurring in recent years. What makes criminal activity of this nature such a threat is that the perpetrators could be incarcerated while committing the crime. Dr. Tessa Cole helped shed light on this topic by highlighting some of the methods used by these cybercriminals. The ability to commit such crimes is feasible only through a cellular device, which still provides a plethora of ways to engage in criminal activity. Identity theft has become a prominent issue, resulting in unauthorized access to sensitive information or funds. The federal limit for a single instance of online theft is $5,000. Unfortunately, this means that these criminals can still profit without facing legal consequences. Scams can also be used through payment applications like Venmo or Cash App. Additionally, these criminals have the capability of SIM swapping to hide their identity, a method accounted for only as of 2022. In conclusion, the escalating prevalence of cybercrimes, facilitated by access to cellular devices and the tactics used by criminals, should be a threat that is acknowledged by many.
