Work Experience
From 2006 to 2007, while studying in Japan, I worked as an English instructor for A-Corn Club, a small, privately-owned language school in suburban Osaka. At the same time, I taught weekly lessons for the six members of a social/civic club whom I met while working together on an independent film project. Teaching was easily the most satisfying work experience I’ve had to date. Despite my limited teaching experience, my extensive experience as a student of foreign languages made me very aware of the common challenges language students face. I believe this awareness allowed me to design lesson plans which helped my students increase their language proficiency while experiencing the joy of communication.
Since late 2007, I have been a Porter at The Dorchester, a high-rise condominium building in downtown Philadelphia. As a Porter, I am responsible for cleaning and maintaining the facilities of a 500+ unit residential building. Working at The Dorchester has been an excellent opportunity to observe many of the leadership and organizational management principles I’ve learned as a business student as they are applied (successfully and unsuccessfully) in the real world. Observing the daily inner workings of a real business firm at the Dorchester motivates me to take full advantage of every opportunity I have as a Temple student.
