MIS 4596 Project Reflections

The team project in MIS 4596 had quite a few similarities to the project done two semesters prior in MIS 3506, such as preparing a charter, scope, and prototype. However, there were new expectations as well, the most significant being the creation of the project idea from scratch. Our team spent a lot of time brainstorming and developing potential ideas. For every reason we came up with in support of an idea, there were two that challenged it. And even after selecting one and moving forward, we ultimately changed it to something completely different after seriously considering our mentor’s suggestions. Then we adjusted it as we went along producing our deliverables. So one major takeaway is that really spending time developing and planning out an idea and business case is extremely important for a project to be successful. Clearly defining a scope that is attainable is critical, and so is not deviating from it, at least not too far. That being said, as much preparation as one does, there are many details that affect the project that will present themselves as work is done, requiring adaptability. Which leads to a second major takeaway, that a strong, balanced team that can work well together is equally important for the success of a project. This may be harder to control at a job where teams are assigned, but each of us can highlight our strengths, try to notice how others work best, and optimally align those pieces so that everyone is in the best position to succeed.
