Professional Development Activities

2018 Summer Internship

In the Summer of 2018, I had the privilege of interning at a local manufacturing company. Here I interacted with many business professionals and learned how to work in a professional setting. I gained valuable interpersonal skills and learned more about a market that I did not previously know about. This experience is important to an MIS professional because during the course of my internship, I witnessed how many different departments in a business interact. It is important to understand this interaction in the development and implementation of Information Systems.

Sonny Shine Window Project

At the end of the 2018 Spring semester, I developed a web application that allowed my showcase the skills that I learned in MIS 3501 (Data Centric Application Development). The web application linked a website created from PHP and HTML to a SQL database using PDO. This is interesting because it was the first application that I developed on my own. It was an important step in my MIS career because I had to create and design the application from scratch.

Text Mining and Sentiment Analysis

At the end of the 2018 Spring Semester, I wrote a paper about Text Mining and Sentiment Analysis. These are two very important concepts in Modern Data Analytics. By conducting the research for this paper, I learned about these very important concepts. It was also very interesting because I was able to link these concepts with R, a data analytics language that we learned about in MIS 2502 (Data Analytics). This project was also important for my development as an MIS professional because it was one of the first time that I formally researched concepts pertaining to technology and articulated my findings in a short research paper.
