Tips for Technical Interviewing with SIG Susquehanna

On September 22nd I attended an online webinar hosted by SIG Susquehanna, a trading and finance firm.  This event was focused on young professionals looking for IT and Technical Developer roles and what they can expect when interviewing for SIG and other companies.  We specifically went over coding assessments.

I learned a couple of valuable pieces of insight from the speakers.  First, the interviewers want you to succeed.  You can ask them for questions or even hints and they will be accommodating.  This is because of the next very important piece of information I picked up: they care more about learning how you think, rather than if you actually solved the problem or not.

I recall the one speaker saying, “If you solve the problem in a minute, that great.  But if you don’t tell us what your thought process is, like, thats kinda the whole point”.  This really stuck out to me.  As someone who isnt in a hyper-technical major like Computer Science, I can use my transparent communication skills to explain how I’m thinking through a problem without necessarily knowing the exact Syntax.

At the end of the day, this is one of the most valuable online information sessions I have attended.  I gained some new, useful advice that I plan to utilize during furute interviews and assessments.
