BDO is the world’s fifth largest public accounting firm and is headquartered in Zaventem, Belgium. The firm has three lines of service: Audit and Assurance, Tax, and Advisory.

Job function (e.g., overall role, assigned tasks)

  1. Assembled engagement letters, working papers and other documents for audit projects
  2. Balanced Statements of Cash Flows and Operations by adding and making the proper adjustments required
  3. Communicated with client’s creditors, banks, and other related parties to discuss statements or vendor receipts
  4. Provided support and assistance to audit staff during non-profit, banking, insurance, and manufacturing and distribution engagements

Examples of projects (e.g., list the projects you worked on and what you accomplished)

  1. For one of the banking clients I was on, I was able to finish a whole part of an audit by myself. This part of the audit included testing to see if employee benefit amounts were being properly rolled over and required me to find the necessary information from the documents that we requested and/or the client sent.
  2. I was able to work through a quarterly report for a client and mark up any edits or changes that needed to be made before the report was sent out to the public. Additionally, I had to tie out the information to the financial statements in order to make sure the numbers were properly being represented.
  3. I was in a four person intern group presenting on the topic “Workplace of the Future,” which provided four different suggestions on how to improve the office design. This project was worked on throughout the 10 week internship and was presented to 4 partners, the HR Manager, and the other interns in the office.

What you learned and how it relates to your major (e.g., describe what you learned from this internship in the context of specific courses).

  1. As being a double major in Accounting and MIS, I was able to better understand the controls that were tested for disbursement of financial information/data and the processes that went into how clients would give out this information. This is related to not only my accounting information systems course but also my data analytics course as both of them talked about databases and the relationships with data between two or more entities.
  2. In relation to my auditing class, I was able to understand the different types of risks the client could face and the levels of materiality when looking over how much clients’s financial information might be off by. This knowledge was often used for many tests as we dealt with a lot of financial information that came in as an employee benefit plan or a year end audit.
