Internship at The Franklin Institute

During the Spring 2017 semester, I interned for The Franklin Institute located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Franklin Institute is one of the oldest and premier centers of science education and development in the country. The museum is “dedicated to public education and creating a passion for science by offering new and exciting access to science and technology in ways that would dazzle and delight its namesake.” The Franklin Institute’s services include general admission to the museum, special exhibitions, theater shows, and attractions.

I started in mid January and it lasted until the first week of May so this internship program was about 20 weeks. I worked as a digital media intern and my responsibilities were anywhere from using content management systems for our website to analyzing site traffic and compiling reports. From this internship, I learned what it meant to be in MIS and how being so, can help an organization.

Furthermore and more specifically, my main day to day responsibilities were to answer ticket requests from other departments such as human resource, marketing, or finance and make their desired changes on the website using a content management system called Drupal. After I make the changes, I submit it to the manager of Digital Media and once she thinks it’s okay, she sends it to the Chief Digital Officer. Once we get the final good to go, we publish the content and make it available for the general public to see. On days where the traffic request aren’t so high, I do a little bit of marketing from analyzing web pages with Google Analytics to capture specific metrics and dimensions to ensuring search engine optimization. Through this internship, it really enhanced my career preparation and skills. Throughout college, I’ve always had exposure and experience with content management systems whether it’s using WordPress to editing my student e-portfolio to using Drupal at work. Prior to this internship, I never realized the crucial part CMS played and that knowing such a skill is an asset and considered very valuable for any organization.
