Summer Internship at Bank of China 2015

I was interned at Kunming, Yunnan branch in the summer. I worked at Information and Technology department as cyber security assistant. Bank of China Limited is one of the 5 biggest state-owned commercial banks in China. It has branches in 28 countries including China, United States, Canada, United Kingdom and etc.

At first, all the interns went through some training. Senior executives gave us lectures about the corporation’s core business and vision. Then we started a project at the Information and Technology department called China Cybersecurity week.

It is a project that help people to increase public’s awareness of internet security when using bank’s app or website. We made cartoons and posters by using PhotoShop. These cartoons are introducing methods that hackers might use. For example, pretending as bank’s employees and using text messages and emails to ask customers to send their credit and debit card information. Here is one page of the cartoons that we made. We put all the cartoons and posters on the digital screens in all the branches of the bank. Also for all the employees, we need to watch three videos of cybersecurity problems that may happen in the bank. For example, the first one is about working with a third party which can decrease cost but meanwhile the security of information is a potential issue. Then it taught us how to work with the a third party and secure the information by using background checking, change password after finishing the project and etc.

After a week, I went to take pictures at several branches to see how it worked. We also did a survey for customers to give feedback on the cartoons and posters. We used MySQL as the database to collect the results from our customers because our website are designed in PHP form. We made a table in the MySQL and had a feedback.php page only administrations have access to it. Then we can collect the large data very easily. It turns out many people noticed some bad habits that they performed daily can lead to possible information leak.

I also worked on the monthly e-book during my internship time. The e-book contained articles related to economics, changes at the bank, stories of the bank. I used Microsoft Word and PhotoShop to create the e-book. Every employee can submit their articles and I also looked up some articles from our own Bank website. At the end of the month, after my manager looked at it and proved, we would post it on the Bank’s website. I had a great time at Bank of China. I have learned a lot from my colleges’ experience. They really helped me in many ways. I wish I could use the knowledge in other companies in the future.
