Learning Design Thinking: Lead Change in Your Organization

Title of the activity: Learning Design Thinking: Lead Change in Your Organization

Term of the activity: Spring, 2022

Name of sponsoring organization: Turi McKinley and frog

Details of the activity (e.g., where, when): Online, January 16, 2016

Turi McKinley did a marvelous job describing what exactly design thinking is, along with how we can implement the design thinking mindset and approach. Turi explained that individuals should improve their white-boarding, noting that diagrams and other visual analogies help clarify the longview. I agreed with her when she stated that it is important to engage the skills of everyone at your company because each individual brings a unique perspective to problem-solving. Turi also detailed leading design thinking, challenges one may face, skills, and active alignment of a team. I learned that a leader of a design thinking team must be engaged and present at all times. Leaders must take time to know their team members and familiarize themselves with individual needs. The primary goal for a design thinking leader is to reframe the details in the context of the longview. Next, Turi described guiding creative collaboration and gave an overview of the user-centered design. She helped individuals understand how to generate a hypothesis, create the journey map, synthesis, and developing a service blueprint. Lastly, we focused on prototyping fast and often, along with making a culture change. I gained insight on prototype spaces, learning that you must find a way to transform something very abstract into something understandable. Design thinking is a critical concept that must be understood in the MIS field. Any organization who wishes to improve design thinking and creative problem-solving will implement design thinking. Not only will I benefit in future course by understanding design thinking, but it will also be critical in projects and job opportunities within time.
