MIS 2502

Extra Credit

Being a college student, it is almost impossible to go through your day without utilizing your laptop, phone, or music player. Technology is all around us and has made our lives much more efficient and organized. After taking MIS 2101 I discovered a term that is used to describe any device with an on and off switch, the Internet of Things, or IoT. The Internet of Things not only applies to phones and laptops, it also includes any household appliance with a switch. It is important because we utilize objects that are categorized as Internet of Things every day. According to the analyst firm Gatner, there will be over 26 billion connected devices in the year 2020.

It builds on concepts covered in MIS 2502 because the Internet of Things is basically a ton of data. Concepts like the data cube and data mining are similar due to their ability to adapt to the advancement in technology. A data cube is used for multidimensional data analysis which is built off of the idea of IoT because as IoT grew, the amount of data increased so companies needed a place to store it. Data mining has evolved through the statistics and computer ages and has used big data and widespread adoption today.

An example of how the Internet of Things has been applied in practice is through products which are considered ‘wearables’ with multiple features. One popular example is the Apple Watch which, according to Tim Cook, will revolutionize the new age of Internet of Things because it is “Apple’s most personal device ever.” With features such as brewing your coffee and setting bedroom lighting, the Apple watch is a good example of the Internet of Things that will kick start the mega-era of computing.
