Weekly Question #6

Leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of day, June 18th.  Your response only needs to be about three or four sentences. For this weekly question, I am mainly interested in your biggest takeaway from this class.  After spending the last 6 weeks learning about how you, as business professionals, will utilize technology in the workforce to be efficient and effective, what do you think is the most important aspect of technology in the workforce?  What key elements can you use to shape your future (or current) outlook?

  • I feel the most important aspect of technology is having the right solution for the right problem. It’s important that you don’t over engineer a solution. If you’re a small company and need increased visibility or communication SAP or Oracle is probably not for you. If you have a sales force of 5 people Salesforce.com is not the right solution. I agree having a solution is beneficial but having the wrong solution could be disastrous. Technology can be a huge benefit or a huge impediment, so due diligence is key.

  • There are so many interesting and important subjects discussed and learned in this class. I chose however to talk about one thing that I learned and I think will be very important in the near future. I believe software and data are the future in some ways. If businesses invest in learning how to build software and customize to fit different departments of its business, then they will be very efficient and successful long term. Data is important because if interpreted an used correctly you can have very useful and important information. For example, I think data can be used in the future to predict crime and terrorist acts.

  • There a few topics I thought of choosing but there is one recurring theme I have noticed throughout this entire course and that is our ability to gather data, analyze, and draw conclusions in order to speed up business processes and increase efficiency. This ability from new and rising technologies is one of the major aspects that defines a business’s success. This has the biggest impact on the workforce because although this technology is great for companies because they can cut down on labor costs and conduct more business faster and more accurate, the workforce will have learn how the new technology works and be able to operate it and if the new technology is self-sufficient, then the workforce will shrink and unemployment will rise. Therefor the most important aspect of technology in relation to the workforce is if it is self-sufficient or not because this directly correlates to the size of the workforce. I believe because this seems to be a negative relationship that this new technology should be directed to new areas that help the workforce. An example is how hospitals have implemented RFID in order to better help, categorize and analyze patients.

  • This class has helped me learn to identify and analyze organizational systems and processes. I really liked using multiple types of systems and analyze information to come up with ways to better a business structure. The subjects that stuck with me the most are swim lane diagrams and ERDs. I feel that I now understand how they better a business and how they could prove beneficial to growth. Thanks to this class, I now understand that MIS is a very powerful force that pushes a business forward.

  • Throughout this course, I have learned and understood a lot of useful things about technology, systems, and processes for an organization to work with. After spending the last 6 weeks, I can say that technology is extremely efficient in the workforce because it can make the process quicker, easier, and more accurate. The most important aspect of the technology in the workforce, I believe it is how we can bring it and use it in the right way. Throughout this class, I have acknowledged what is the differences between IT, IS, MIS and the differences between kinds of diagrams, which I suppose those knowledges will help me alot in my future courses.

  • My biggest take away from this class was the high importance MIS plays in business. I had a general understanding that MIS was more for website design or high level workings of the computer system. When in fact MIS and its applications are very important across all areas of the organization. Swim lane diagrams were something that I initially struggled with, but as the course moved forward and different examples were used with business applications it became more clear to me of their role within the organization. Overall this was one of my favorite classes that I took at Temple University.

  • My biggest takeaway from this course is how huge a roll MIS plays in the business world. I think everyone knows how large a role the internet and computers have taken in business, but it wasn’t until this class that I really began to understand the systems that make it all work efficiently. I found the ERP systems, swim lane diagrams, and ERD diagrams all very interesting. I will definitely use them in the future. I liked learning about how they help keep everything organized and in check within a company. Growing up in the technology era. we are all so used to computers just doing everything for us–it was cool to get an idea of what goes into it in a split second. All in all, I thought this was a very interesting class. I feel I got a lot out of it.

  • Coming into this course, I was only slightly interested in the topic. However, the course was extremely interesting, engaging, and I found it very useful. My biggest takeaway from this course would be the knowledge I now have behind how technology is implemented in business settings and our everyday lives. Businesses thrive off of technology, and without it, they may not be as successful as they are with it. However, it must be implemented for the right reasons and run by those who perfect in that category. All in all, this was one of the better courses I took at Temple University! And, thank you Professor, for doing a tremendous job teaching it!

  • The biggest takeaway from this course for me was, how I received a totally different outlook on what MIS really entails. I came into this course thinking I was going to learn about computers (more specifically computer science) and how computers operate. I was completely incorrect! I’ve learned a great deal in this course. I now know that MIS is using Information Technology in order to solve business problems. MIS basically ties together all entities within an organization (Accounting, Finance, Sales, Human Resources and Production) to make them all run a business. The overall objective is to have the business run efficiently and effectively using specific technology geared for that particular organization. Lastly, this was an extremely great and informative class! Again, I learned a lot of new ways in which businesses are ran behind the scene and also the foundational tools needed to implement different systems – if my future career calls for it. Thanks!

  • The past couple weeks, though accelerated, have taught me a lot about Management information Society. The biggest thing that i can take away from this class is the insights to the variety of networks that make up a business and make it organized. i had heard of supply chain and CRM before but this class did a good job of explaining the components of it. I also loved that we did not have a textbook and instead read articles online. Not only was this unorthodox, but it made it feel more like a real world environment. This class taught me a lot and i can tell why the M.I.S. department at Temple is so nationally acclaimed.

  • My biggest takeaway from this class would have to be the usefulness of ERD and swimlane diagrams. Having a visual tool to map out processes and better understand where weak points or problem areas may be is something i believe will be incredibly useful as i continue into a career in business. Being able to understand information systems is very important for any business person and I believe that these tools will be very beneficial in helping me understand any system i come across.

  • During this six week course it has helped me to have a better understanding of what MIS is and how is used on the work environment. I would say that everything that I learned it will use it as a professional along my business career. Swimmlines and ERPs gave me a hard time at the beginning to understand, but now I understand and how clear the information is represented which helps to find easily some of the business problems and their relationship with different departments. Taking this class has encourage me to have a minor on MIS.

  • The six weeks MIS course allowed me to have a general understanding of the software and platform to be used in the business, ERP, CRM, SCM and more. Also, Swimlane and ERD diagram are used all across the semester. I think these method can also be applied in my other subjects of study.

  • During this class I learned a tremendous amount about MIS. At first it was just a class I had to take but it quickly grabbed my interest and I was hooked. What I took most away from this class was swim lane diagrams and ERD diagrams. Also its just so happened that I started an internship this summer where I had to make swim lane diagrams. Because I learned them in this class I was able to impress my coworkers and make a quick impact on the company. Although, we didn’t discus it too much my favorite article in the class was the reading ” The Road to AI”, which I found mind blowing.

  • This course opened up by business perspective into a whole new view. I realized that in this technology based world, the most successful companies are going to be those that utilize the best technology. While incorporating and updating this technology into a business may be difficult, it will allow for increased profitability and longterm success. I also learned to watch out for potential flaws and dangers as the power of technology is growing. No matter what my involvement in a business will be, I will now be aware of potential company improvements by incorporating aspects like ERD, ERP, CRM, and swim lane diagrams. In the end, improving efficiency in your business processes is key.

  • This course certainly was a significant learning experience for me in that I obtained a much greater understanding of how businesses today are using information technology systems to streamline their processes. Ultimately, I believe that large data collection is the most important technological aspect of a business. The further a company can begin to understand exactly what the tendencies and preferences of its target consumers are, the more they can increase revenue on a large scale by providing not only a catered shopping experience but also providing the exact products consumers are most highly demanding. There are many other technological systems that businesses have in place that will certainly affect the future outlook of how companies operate, but ultimately I think that large data collection/analysis will be of highest importance to companies.

  • Technology simplified lives of many people including business professionals. I still remember the time when my mom had piles of journals and other documents on her desk when she worked as an accountant. Now specialized software stores and processes all of the necessary information and some activities can be done with a click of a button. Before this class, I had no idea about ERP or CRM systems. I knew that there’s something that businesses use, but now I know in details how these enterprise systems work and what their benefits are. In addition, I was impressed by the articles on Artificial Intelligence. Maybe we’ll see with our own eyes what ASI really looks like in the near future.

  • As others have said, there are many things that I can take away from this course but I think the most key part is the use of swim lane diagrams and ERD diagrams. I think I will be able to use these skills in other classes at Temple, as well as in the workforce after college. I think these are important because it helps to keeps data organized within a company and creates easy access to information needed. Also, it is important to be able to see where a company went wrong and swim lane diagrams make it possible with their easy to read format. i think having each of these diagrams on all of our exams has encouraged us to really focus on their significance and enhance our skills in them.

  • There were a lot of topics that we touched on during our six weeks in this course that I enjoyed. I really liked the artificial intelligence articles that we read. For instance, I had obviously heard of Watson before, but I was unaware of his current use, and was very intrigued to read about his current involvement in improving our health care procedures. In addition, I think that I learned a great deal regarding Swim Lane and ERD diagrams, something I hadn’t known about previously. I think that since they involve a lot of different sections of a firm, I can use this information in my other classes as well as my future employment upon graduation.

  • Currently working in a young company with a changing structure and landscape I found learning about software and operating systems to be the most beneficial. My company is in the process of changing software to one that allows more customization to our specific business needs which fits into the scope of the multiple management software systems we have discussed throughout this course. Learning how to properly identify and implement the correct software for your business and industry is the biggest takeaway from this course for myself. Hopefully I will be able to help the people around me have a better understanding of the importance of the right software tailored towards your business needs and objectives. By staying current with changing software technology and platforms I can help give my young company a competitive advantage over comparable companies in the market place.

  • My biggest take awau from this class was the different types of software that a business utilizes. I really enjoyed learning about ERP, CRM, and the different types of platforms. It really opened my eyes up to the modern mechanics that allows large organization to run and operate so smoothly.

  • There are many things in this course that I will definitely take away from and use towards my future careers. I really gained a strong knowledge of what really goes on behind the scenes when it comes to ordering/processes/etc. From the swim lane diagrams to the ERDs to simply gaining an understanding of what IT really entails. In this world of constant change in technology it is good to have a firm grasp on what technology can really do for a company to help in the success of the company. The articles also helped to really get a real world feel for it, as well as the many in class examples. Overall, I really gained a lot from this course.

  • I was not interested in taking this class at all and thought that it was unnecessary to take. I thought, “I’m going to be an accountant, not making software” but Fox requires it, so I had to sign up. During the semester, I learned why the business school forces students to take this class. Every thing in business revolves around technology. I really have a better understanding of why a general understanding of technologies, such as ERP, CRMs, and Cloud computing is important. As an accountant, I will never make these softwares but I will be using them and it is important to always stay in touch with these technologies. The knowledge and skills, such as swim lanes and ERD diagrams , that I obtained in this class will help me be a better student for my last semester and a better employee upon graduation.

  • Something that I took a way from this class is how helpful technology can be for a business. Not necessarily to put a product out to customers, but to help a company run as efficiently as possible. One of the most important things for a business is that it runs as smoothly as possible, and the communication between all areas of the company. Also I learned that although technology can be complex, It is actually doable and not that hard to learn.

  • The biggest takeaway that I have learned in this class is the process of how information systems operate. The biggest contributor to learning this process is the swim lane diagrams. In the beginning I was confused with how to create a swim lane diagram but I feel like I mastered it. I think it’s a useful tool to use not only in the work place but also in my courses. It helps organize different processes from start to finish. It helps set out s plan.

  • My biggest take away from this course will be how the use of swim lane diagrams help to illustrate complex processes within a company. Also the importance of ERPs, CRMs, and SCMs to improve business tasks and give companies a competitive edge.

  • After taking this course, my biggest takeaway is how essential MIS actually is in a business. Before this class, I underestimated how much importance information systems had in an organization. I have come to realize that MIS is somewhat of a backbone to businesses. Its connects all the departments of an organization together to make sure things run smoothly. When all the departments are tied together, strategic business decisions and processes can be handled much more efficiently and effectively. Though MIS isn’t entirely made up of technology, it is a big part of it, and we live in such a technologically advanced world where most businesses must use technology to thrive. However if I learned anything from this class, it’s that technology is only efficient if you implement it and use it the right way and for the right reasons. Thanks for being a great professor! I enjoyed this course very much!

  • The most important part of the class for me was the swim lanes and ERD diagrams. These are important not just for IT related projects, but important for projects throughout an organization. Learning to create these diagrams helped me to talk through the process, allowing for a better chance to catch anything that was missing. Exercises like the ones we did in class will be beneficial at my job when working with others on projects.

  • I really enjoyed this class. I liked learning about all of the different types of platforms and data warehouses/ storage type things. MIS is something that is so active in our world today, but you never really stop to think about how it works. This class was able to open that portal and I enjoyed learning it.
