A drivers license (DL) and digital certificate (DC) are both forms of identification and ways to authenticate someone. The similarity is that both forms of identification rely on our trust in the “issuer” or the authority that signed or gave the form. The difference for each is that we inherently trust a drivers license because it is issued by the government. Driver licenses are used to verify one’s identity, but often along with another government issued document. While a driver’s license could be forged it is difficult to forge it and get away with it when the person validating it knows what to look for. There are several things. (photo, date of birth, location, signature) on a DL to confirm its validity. A DC used a chain of things for verification. This can be problematic because if one part of that chain is compromised it can lead to incorrect validation. For example, if the CA’s certificate with it’s public key is compromised in any way then it could lead another certificate to be validated when it shouldn’t be.
